Este libro analiza la importancia de la banca relacional en España, caracterizada por su aplicación en la interacción repetida con los clientes y la aceptación de contratos duraderos e incompletos como base fundamental de la generación de valor. Este nuevo enfoque se contrapone a la banca transaccional, que valora separadamente el resultado de los distintos contratos con un horizonte temporal más corto. El intermediario que opta por hacer banca relacional no es altruista, pues considera que la cooperación contribuye a optimizar la inversión en información específica de los clientes, sopesando su rentabilidad en un horizonte a largo plazo y a través del conjunto de servicios que les suministra. La investigación analiza los perfiles de las actividades relacionales en las empresas bancarias españolas, constatando su importancia actual y evaluando algunas implicaciones. En particular se estudian las consecuencias que las relaciones de confianza entre empresas no financieras y bancos pueden tener para los costes financieros de éstas y para la competencia bancaria. Asimismo, se tiende al efecto sobre la eficiencia bancaria derivado del nivel de confianza existente en cada momento en el entorno del sector bancario, analizándose desde esta perspectiva la localización de las entidades.
