Consacré aux formes intermédiales de la bande dessinée, cet ouvrage issu d’un colloque du CERIC (Cercle d’étude et de recherche en Information-Communication, LERASS-CERIC) qui s’est tenu en novembre 2016 à l’Université Paul-Valéry de Montpellier 3, rassemble des contributions sur l’approche des dimensions polymorphes et multimédia de cet art entendue comme une part structurante et dynamique de notre culture visuelle. En ouvrant la Bande dessinée in extenso, ces études complètent une voie de recherche sur la création et les productions esthétiques établissant des rapports entre arts et visual studies dans une perspective qui intéresse notamment les Sciences de l’information et de la communication mais aussi la sociologie, l’histoire, la philosophie et l’histoire des arts. Les contributions sont organisées selon cinq parties correspondant respectivement : 1) à la bande dessinée en tant qu’objet de recherche, en particulier à l’Université Paul Valéry, où elle fit partie, dès 1979, des préoccupations scientifiques des Lettres et Sciences Humaines et Sociales ; 2) aux temps, récits et imaginaires dans la construction d’une culture visuelle du passé, du présent et du futur ; 3) aux auteurs et œuvres au regard du concept d’intermédialité ; 4) aux rôle des médias et aux frontières de genre interrogeant l’intermédiation ; 5) aux nouvelles écritures de la bande dessinée participant à une diffusion renouvelée des savoirs.

A native of nineteenth-century New Orleans, George Herriman came of age as an illustrator, journalist, and cartoonist in the boomtown of Los Angeles and the wild metropolis of New York. Appearing in the biggest newspapers of the early twentieth century—including those owned by William Randolph Hearst—Herriman’s Krazy Kat cartoons quickly propelled him to fame. Although fitfully popular with readers of the period, his work has been widely credited with elevating cartoons from daily amusements to anarchic art.
