This book is a history of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a multilateral development bank established 50 years ago to serve Asia and the Pacific. Focusing on the region's economic development, the evolution of the international development agenda, and the story of ADB itself, this book raises several key questions: What are the outstanding features of regional development to which ADB had to respond? How has the bank grown and evolved in changing circumstances? How did ADB's successive leaders promote reforms while preserving continuity with the efforts of their predecessors? ADB has played an important role in the transformation of Asia and the Pacific over the past 50 years. As ADB continues to evolve and adapt to the region's changing development landscape, the experiences highlighted in this book can provide valuable insight on how best to serve Asia and the Pacific in the future.

The new sustainable development agenda is expected to touch every country, person, and activity. Therefore, shouldn't every dollar count toward achieving it? Asia and the Pacific, home to more than half of humanity, has the money to improve the lives of all its people, and protect the planet in fair and durable ways. However, funds are in many hands, invested elsewhere, or used for various purposes. It is time to move beyond this fragmentation and align finance behind sustainable development, recognizing that while capital will be key, so will the capacity to apply and attract it effectively. This report explores some of the ways forward. It highlights not just the need to inject more money into investments that contribute to sustainable development, but also the need to attract funds toward them---to finance human needs, infrastructure, and cross-border public goods. The report spans public and private options, in their distinct roles and in combination. An eight-point agenda suggests how key constituents can do their parts. Working together, they can make money work for development where benefits are not only more equitably shared, but will last for generations to come.

Banking in Asia: The End of Entitlement The late 1990s has seen a turning point in Asian banking. The golden days of easy money and booming profits have come to an abrupt end. What was effectively the age of entitlement in Asia banking is over, and a new era is about to begin. Asia's new banking environment will see a revamped financial industry requiring fresh formulas for success, resulting in a new competitive balance among domestic and global players. This remarkably detailed analysis, drawing on the authors' years of work with leading local and international commercial and investment banks in the region, highlights the long-term challenges, opportunities, and changes which will shape Asian banking well into the first decade of the 21st century. The 21st century is often positioned as "the Pacific Century". Without an effective and efficient banking industry in Asia, it will be no such thing. Covering major businesses and banking markets in Asia, highlights include: * Corporate Banking: Big Profits Among the Risks * Investment Banking: No Escape from Global Trends * Trading in Asia: Back to the Basics * Private Banking: A Miracle for a Few * Japan: Modernizing the System, Mobilizing the Wealth * China: Sustaining a Careful Balance For anyone involved in the future of Asian banking, this should be a compulsory read.

Japan’s Future in East Asia and the Pacific takes a ’big-picture‘ approach to Japan’s economic place in East Asia alongside that of China. It analyses Japan’s successes and experiments in trade policy as well as its failures in macro-economic policy. Japan’s diplomatic and economic integration strategies are also examined for their impact on East Asia and on Australia. The collection assesses China’s growth and dynamism and questions the nature of the competition for economic influence between Japan and China. Contributors to Japan’s Future in East Asia and the Pacific are all graduates of The Australian National University who are making their mark in the region as scholars and economists on East Asian and Pacific affairs.

Financial Development And Cooperation In Asia And The Pacific written by Edward K. Y. Chen and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-13 with Business & Economics categories.

The 1997–8 Asian financial crisis exposed weaknesses in the region’s national financial systems, but since then East Asia has become the world’s most dynamic economic region. Domestic financial systems have developed, cross-border financial flows within the region are growing apace as demand from governments and large firms increases and as the capabilities of financial institutions develop, and governments have initiated regional cooperation aimed at preventing future crises and managing them if they occur. This book examines the economies of Asia and the Pacific with reference to financial reform and liberalization, monetary policy frameworks, banking and capital markets, regulation and supervision and macroeconomic policies. Further, it asks what lessons have been learned from both the Asian financial crisis and the recent financial crisis, how to engender financial stability in the region, and how to ensure that the benefits of economic growth and financial development reach all members of society. Across four key sections, the chapters examine the future implications of historical studies of the relationships between financial development and growth; financial development including banks, non-bank financial institutions and capital markets; how financial stability is being sought in the region; and China’s plans for capital account opening and renminbi internationalization and subsequent the policy implications for China’s neighbours. This book draws on papers originally presented to the 36th Pacific Trade and Development Conference held in Hong Kong in 2013, and features contributions from leading academics and economists from around the world. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Asian economics, Asia Pacific studies, international economics and international finance.
