This publication is the first extensive publication on the oeuvre of Dutch artist Barbara Visser (*1966). Barbara Visser's works explore the uncertain relationship between registration and dramatization, between notions of original and copy, the natural versus the staged, and the tension between what we call the documentary and the fictitious. Using a wide variety of media and formats, her work sheds a new light on our understanding of civilized man, and the objects with which he surrounds himself. By rigorously separating text and image, the book offers multiple interpretations, triggering the reader's own memory and associations. As Jörg Heiser writes his text on "myths": "It can be read as an intricate set of experiments exploring three distinct ways of 'navigating' myths, and a possible notion of truth that we inevitably need in order to do so. These three different ways, correspond to the three different types of empirical knowledge as defined by Donald Davidson: knowledge about what's in my mind, in the world, and in other people's minds." Leidsche Rijn bij Utrecht mocht niet de zoveelste uitbreidingswijk achter geluidswallen, sportvelden en bedrijventerreinen worden. Daarom bedachten de stedenbouwkundigen Riek Bakker en Rients Dijkstra een list: zij wilden de A2, bron van herrie en stank, verstoppen in een tunnel. Zo kon de wijk pal langs de weg gebouwd worden zonder geluidshinder en luchtvervuiling. De andere barrière tussen stad en nieuwbouw, het Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal, zou volgens de twee visionairs een soort gracht moeten worden, met een extra brug en woningbouw aan beide oevers. Hoewel menigeen het plan beschreef als luchtfietserij, kwam de Leidsche Rijntunnel er toch. Tegenover de weldadige omstandigheden op het tunneldak staan vraagtekens over de veiligheid in de tunnel. De Utrechtse brandweer wil een soort sprinklersysteem om snel in te kunnen grijpen bij calamiteiten, Rijkswaterstaat vertrouwt op de zelfredzaamheid van de automobilist. Hoe de kemphanen Aleid Wolfsen en Camiel Eurlings uiteindelijk een gewapende vrede sloten over de tunnel en waarom de strijd toch weer op zal laaien, staat centraal in deze op ambachtelijk spitwerk gebaseerde journalistieke kroniek. De auteur beschrijft de volwassenwording van een in zichzelf gekeerde stad, de ontwikkeling van een eigenzinnige Vinex-wijk en hoe een bijzonder idee toch werkelijkheid kan worden als iedereen eraan vasthoudt - waarbij nog wel wat risico’s blijven liggen.
