Bardelys the Magnificent is a 1926 American romantic silent film directed by King Vidor and starring John Gilbert and Eleanor Boardman. The film is based on a novel by Rafael Sabatini. It was the second film of the 19-year-old John Wayne, who had a minor role. The film is set in the reign of King Louis XIII. When Chatellerault fails to win the heart of the icy Roxalanne de Lavedan, he wagers his entire estate against that of Bardelys that Bardelys can't either."

"Speak of the Devil," whispered La Fosse in my ear, and, moved by the words and by the significance of his glance, I turned in my chair. 1The door had opened, and under the lintel stood the thick-set figure of the Comte de Chatellerault. Before him a lacquey in my escutcheoned livery of red-and-gold was receiving, with back obsequiously bent, his hat and cloak. A sudden hush fell upon the assembly where a moment ago this very man had been the subject of our talk, and silenced were the wits that but an instant since had been making free with his name and turning the Languedoc courtship-from which he was newly returned with the shame of defeat-into a subject for heartless mockery and jest. Surprise was in the air for we had heard that Chatellerault was crushed by his ill-fortune in the lists of Cupid, and we had not looked to see him joining so soon a board at which-or so at least I boasted-mirth presided.

Rafael Sabatini (1875 - 1950) was an Italian/British writer of novels of romance and adventure. At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages. By the time he was seventeen, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language - English - to his linguistic collection. After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. Sabatini was a prolific writer; he produced a new book approximately every year. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English." In all, he produced thirty one novels, eight short story collections, six nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. He is best known for his world-wide bestsellers: The Sea Hawk (1915), Scaramouche (1921), Captain Blood (1922) and Bellarion the Fortunate (1926). Other famous works by Sabatini are The Lion's Skin (1911), The Strolling Saint (1913) and The Snare (1917).

"It is refreshing to meet with so complete and musical a vocabulary as this author - with an un-English patronymic - possesses. The story of the strange wooing of the magnificent Bardelys and of the things that in the course of it befell him in Languedoc lends itself readily to the word-painting and dramatic expression which form a large part of Mr. Sabatini's equipment, and in this case matter as well as manner is good. The chief character - one of the arrogant, masterful heroes so much in vogue - is interesting from the time of the somewhat questionable wager which precipitates the wooing of his Marquise to the hour of its happy conclusion. It is a wholesome, stirring story." -The Athenaeum "This romance belongs to the school of Mr. Stanley Weyman, and it is doubtful if even that ingenious and spirited writer could have contrived a more ingenious and spirited yarn." -Daily Mail "A more engaging and human swashbuckler even Mr. Stanley Weyma has not given us more than the intrepid, resourceful, and romantic Sieur Marcel de St. Pol, Marquis of Bardelys." -Tribune "A romance of swords." -T. P.'s Weekly "A tale of France in the time of Louis XIII and of a wooing that began with a wager." -Wisconsin Library Bulletin Contents CHAPTER I. THE WAGER CHAPTER II. THE KING'S WISHES CHAPTER III.
