The first book of the project is devoted to the works on paper by the artist.Skira and Jack Shainman Gallery have partnered to conceive, develop and produce a significant project dedicated to the artist Barkley L. Hendricks. Not only is it extensive and unprecedented - no in-depth and international publications exist on said artist - but it is also superior, in scope and depth, to contemporary artist monographs.Jack Shainman Gallery exhibits and represents contemporary artists from all over the world, and is one of today's leading private art galleries worldwide, originating out of New York City. Description of the project:The project is made up of 5 components: it consists of 4 booklets each of which provides an in-depth exploration of a corpus of works key to the artist's output (Landscape Paintings, Basketball Paintings, Photography, Works on Paper) as well as a comprehensive 300-page monograph which traces the artist's evolution from the origins of his career to his death. Each project will contain essays by different scholars, all of which are leading international players. The project will be tied to an extensive, never-accomplished-before recovery of the artist's archive. The booklets are important specifically because, differently to the monograph, they will allow for a detailed, oriented study of key works. The booklets will be indispensable to art lovers, museums and art historians and provide further material of study and reading in addition to the comprehensive monograph.

The penultimate installment in Skira's five-volume Barkley Hendricks survey reveals the artist's little-known work in photography Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) revolutionized postmodern Black portraiture. This volume, the fourth in a five-part series dedicated to Hendricks' career, focuses on the artist's photographic oeuvre. Hendricks credited photography as a key facet of his practice, both as a tool for documenting his own work and as a source of inspiration for his paintings. Influenced by his experiences under Walker Evans' tutelage at Yale, Hendricks frequently took to the streets to capture the world as he saw it, with his subjects in their element as they lingered in front of stores or performed in jazz clubs. As in his paintings, Hendricks' attention to graphic composition and ability to capture his subjects' dynamism are stunning. For the first time, Hendricks' considerable body of photographic work is collected in a single volume, revealing an essential though underdiscussed dimension of his art.

The little-known Jamaican landscapes of Barkley L. Hendricks, in a handsome, affordable format Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) was originally a student of landscape painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the late 1960s, where he also discovered a love for photography. However, it was only in the 1980s that he decided to veer away from making the large figurative paintings that had become his trademark style in favor of outdoor landscape painting. For the next two decades, during vacations to Jamaica, he would dedicate himself to painting views of the country on oval, circular and lunette (half-moon) forms. This publication, which presents for the first time a selection of these landscape works, is enriched with a contribution by art critic, art historian and scholar Barry Schwabsky. It is the second volume in Skira and Jack Shainman Gallery's comprehensive five-volume publication project on Hendricks.

The court, the ball and the hoop: Barkley Hendricks paints basketball The third installment in Skira and Jack Shainman Gallery's five-volume overview of American artist Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) explores the artist's relationship to basketball, which provided a significant source of artistic inspiration throughout his life. In his Basketballseries, Hendricks applied his keen compositional sense and stylish use of color to depictions of the sport's essential elements: hoops, nets, backboards and, of course, basketballs themselves. In one painting, the image of a basketball about to make its way into a hoop is repeated twice on a round canvas; on another circular canvas, the iconic black ribs of a basketball are rendered in a bold orange to create a minimalistic yet instantly recognizable pattern. A study in movement and geometry, Hendricks' paintings offer a uniquely compelling perspective on the sport as an artistic pursuit. This book's focus on this aspect of Hendricks' work allows for a detail-oriented study of the artist's techniques as a painter.

American artist Barkley L. Hendricks (1945–2017) revolutionized contemporary portraiture with his vivid depictions of Black subjects beginning in the late 1960s. This book contextualizes Hendricks’s portraits at different stages of the country’s history and places him in the pantheon of innovative twentieth-century artists. Hendricks developed his signature style at a time of significant social and cultural change in the United States, especially with regard to Black artists, and amid a perceived bifurcation between abstraction and representation. He produced portraits from the late 1960s through the early 1980s. Following a hiatus during which he made landscapes, basketball paintings, works on paper, and photographs, he resumed his portraiture practice from 2002 until his death in 2017. Hendricks’s portrait paintings, often derived from photographs of friends and family, hired models, or figures he encountered on the street, were inspired by the artist’s research, international travels, and visits to museums like The Frick Collection, where he studied centuries-old European paintings by artists such as Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Bronzino, and others. This publication presents some of the most inventive and striking examples from Hendricks’s first period of portrait painting, including “limited-palette” canvases—featuring Black figures dressed in white against white backgrounds—a self-portrait, and boldly colorful works that spotlight their subjects’ spectacular styles and poses. An assessment of this great artist acknowledges his significant contributions to the canon of American art and portraiture in general. In the book, Hendricks’s art and its impact are explored by artists and creative figures including Derrick Adams, Hilton Als, Nick Cave, Awol Erizku, Rashid Johnson, Fahamu Pecou, Mickalene Thomas, and Kehinde Wiley.

Barkley L Hendricks written by Barkley Hendricks and has been published by Skira this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-03-12 with African American artists categories.

From revolutionizing portraiture to redefining the nude, Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017) is rightly known among the foremost American figurative painters of the late 20th century. Yet his six-decade artistic oeuvre encompasses not only large-scale canvases of distinctively dressed (or undressed) individuals, but also includes evocative landscapes, hard-edged geometric abstractions, lush watercolors on paper and singular photographs informed by his studies with Walker Evans. This definitive volume spans all aspects of the artist's practice--probing his photographic experimentation as a forbear to contemporary street photography; celebrating his great sensitivity as a colorist whose unique expertise seamlessly combines oil-based and water-based pigments to evoke time and place; highlighting the observational genuineness in his provocative and personal interpretations of women, of unapologetically visible queer identities, and of his own beloved black communities across the African Diaspora. Socially urgent and aesthetically powerful, Barkley L. Hendricks is lavishly illustrated by dozens of previously unpublished works. Original texts from contributors allow for the critical proximity of scholars who called Hendricks a friend: art historian Dr. Richard Powell (Duke University) and Trevor Schoonmaker (Director, Nasher Museum of Art); those for whom he was a living inspiration: fashion designer and curator Duro Olowu and Dr. Zoé Whitley (Director, Chisenhale Gallery); and ushers in new discursive perspectives from award-winning graphic novelist and Professor John Jennings (Media & Cultural Studies, University of California, Riverside) and independent curator and writer Susan Thompson (formerly of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum). Like Hendricks himself, this highly anticipated catalogue is deeply researched, multifaceted, insightful, and surprising. Readers who think they know the totality of Hendricks will be left in no doubt of his expansive uniqueness and yes, his peerless acuity as a portraitist.
