On an animal farm located high in eastern Pennsylvania, next to the dark forest, the farm animals like to pass the time by playing a game of tag, led by the farmer's two Shih Tzu dogs, Omni and Baby. A six-foot fence surrounds the farm, which the farmer put up to protect his animals from the bigger and meaner animals who live in the dark forest. The farmer calls them bullies because they all pick on the farm animals. One day, the farmer is working in the lower fields, and the farm animals are playing the game, when suddenly, a big hungry coyote leaps up onto the six-foot fence. He looks at all the farm animals who are frozen with fear. Omni and Baby know that they have to band the animals together and have enough faith to send the worst bully back to the dark forest with the help of an unsuspecting friend.

Kids love animals as much as they love puzzles and silly word games. Barnyard Games & Puzzles follows the success of Horse Games & Puzzles for Kids and The Petting Farm Poster Book. Full of lively drawings, it offers page after page of word games and picture puzzles, as well as jokes, riddles, and word play. Puzzle books for kids are often either too simplistic or too frustratingly difficult for young solvers. Barnyard Games & Puzzles was created by two experienced puzzle makers who have designed a variety of puzzles specifically for five-to eight-year-old readers. With nearly 100 puzzles, the book clusters simpler games in the front and draws the reader on to more complex ones. Connect-the-dots pictures and find-the-hidden-items drawings will entice younger children, while the mix of crossword puzzles, fill-in-the-blanks, mazes, word searches, logic puzzles, codes, and other games will provide hours of fun and delight for both beginning and more experienced readers. Each illustrated page has lots to look at and plenty of room for small fingers to write. A pair of funny farmyard friends wander through the pages giving directions and telling silly jokes. Business Games for Management and Economics: Learning by Playing presents board and video business games which combine teamwork with individual decisions based on computer models. Business games support integration of learning experience for different levels of education and between different disciplines: economics, management, technological, environmental and social studies. The work is based on experience in adaptation, design and conducting of field, and board and video games played in college settings within standard schedules. Most of the games are played in Modeling and Simulation, Microeconomics, Logistics and Supply Chain Management courses. Game boards are 2- or 3-dimensional displays of subsystems, their components and phases of technological and business processes, which allow customization of games of the same type for different missions in schools, universities, and corporate training centers. The range of games applied to economics and management classes spreads from 2-person games for kid's “Aquarium” up to the REACTOR games for several teams of executives.

In this volume fourteen fellows of the International Academy of Education, whose research work is known internationally, reflect upon the ways in which their careers have been shaped by early family influences, by random events and surprise opportunities, and by nascent intellectual interests and academic mentoring. The authors come from many different countries (Australia, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Israel, Mexico, South Africa, and the USA), and from a number of disciplinary or intellectual orientations including curriculum development, economics, educational measurement and statistical analysis, history, philosophy, policy analysis, program evaluation, psychology, and sociology. They come from diverse social and cultural backgrounds; and in many cases rose above the travails presented by wars, social unrest, and social injustice to attain an education that launched them eventually into a research career. On this path, many were unexpectedly assisted by established researchers who served as mentors or “enablers.” Their personal stories, then, are of broad interest – and may even be a source of comfort and inspiration to younger colleagues who are commencing their careers in the international educational research community.
