Base bleed is a technique whereby all or part of the boundary layer is 'bled' from the rear portion of a projectile to the base region. Passage from the model's surface to the base region is by means of concentric cylindrical passageways. The purpose of base bleed is to reduce the Magnus moment on overlong spinning bodies of revolution and to reduce the base drag. Both analytic and experimental results are presented. The boundary layer is represented by means of the momentum thickness.

Detailed finite rate chemistry models for H2 and H2-CO combustion have been incorporated into a Navier-Stoke computer code and applied to flow field simulation in the base region of an M864 base burning projectile. Results without base injection were obtained using a low Reynolds number k-e. turbulence model and several mixing length turbulence models The results with base injection utilized only the Baldwin-Lomax model for the projectile forebody and the Chow wake mixing model downstream of the projectile-base. A validation calculation was performed for a supersonic hydrogen-air burner using an H2, reaction set which is a subset of the H2-CO reaction set developed for the base combustion modeling. The comparison with the available experimental data was good, and provides a level of validation for the technique and code developed. Projectile base-injection calculations were performed for a flat base M864 projectile at M. - 2. Hot air injection, H2 injection and H2-CO injection were modeled, and computed results show reasonable trends in the base pressure increase (base drag reduction), base corner expansion and downstream wake closure location.

A theoretical and experimental investigation has been conducted of the pressure distribution on the surface of either a circular cylinder or a truncated cone located within the base region of another circular cylinder at Mach number 2. A similar analysis of pressure distribution was made for rearward-facing two-dimensional steps, and theoretical results were compared with experimental results of earlier investigations. Theoretical base-pressure ratios of two-dimensional steps agreed well with experimental results; however, as a result of the simplifying assumptions made for axisymmetric configurations, only a range of values for theoretical base-pressure ratio could be calculated within which the experimental results were expected to occur. The data generally followed the trends predicted by the theory, and deviations apparently could be explained.

Base pressure tests were conducted on an ogive-cylinder configuration at Mach numbers 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5. Measurements were obtained while bleeding air into the base region through a variety of base-bleed configurations. For two of the configurations, air was injected into the base through a supersonic sustainer type nozzle simultaneously with base bleed injection. The mass flow rates through the sustainer nozzle and base bleed openings were varied at each Mach number. The results show a net decrease in base drag due to base bleed and a net increase due to supersonic injection whether or not the bleed air and the supersonic air are introduced simultaneously.
