The liver has been an organ of mystery for centuries. Slowly but surely its secrets have been disclosed by both basic research and clinically oriented investigators whose current concepts have been brought together in this book by authors from five different countries. Three major groups with many subgroups have made inroads into our better understanding of the liver. The first of these comprises the basic scientists whose study of single hepatocytes may provide the key to comprehension of mechanisms that will lead eventually to improvement in the morbidity and mortality associated with a variety of hepatic disorders. The second group has been concerned with studies in depth of the liver's response to a variety of hormones, drugs, viruses, and infections. Both early and late results are their concern in the diagnosis and treatment of the individual patient. A third group comprises the surgeons who have become increasingly aggressive in the removal of one or more segments of the liver. They have increased the scope of hepatic resection as a result of a better understanding gained from studies of various segments of the liver. They have accepted the term, segmentectomy, and have extended feasible procedures to include trisegmentectomy. Indeed, trans plantation of the liver has been successfully accomplished.

Hepatology is an important specialty with diseases and complications related to viral hepatitis and alcohol being the main reason for seeking specialist advice. On most general medical rotations and on most surgical wards there are patients with hepatological problems. Hepatology: Clinical Cases Uncovered contains clinical presentations with real-life patient cases and outcomes as seen on the wards and in exams, and leads students through a practical approach to diagnosis and management of hepatological disease. Following a question and answer approach, including self-assessment material and a ‘refresher’ section on the basic science, Hepatology: Clinical Cases Uncovered features investigations and the treatment options available for patients presenting with hepatological problems. Difficult concepts are clarified and relevant links are made between pathology and clinical presentation. Hepatology: Clinical Cases Uncovered is ideal for medical students, junior doctors on the Foundation Programme, GP trainees, residents, specialist nurses and nurse practitioners. The book is also an ideal refresher for hepatology or gastroenterology trainees at the beginning of their specialist training programme

This book presents a comprehensive collection of classic cases and problem scenarios encountered as bedside case discussions during ward rounds. It facilitates the practical management of hepatic disorders. The unique aspect of hepatology involves the blend of the basic tenet of clinical medicine applied to liver disease and a multitude of interventional modalities in the management of liver, biliary, and pancreatic diseases. This book takes the reader through the process of ruling in and ruling out possibilities based on clinical data (history and examination) and then traces the logical trajectory of each case from recommended investigations to the analysis of test results and finally to making a syndromic diagnosis. By adopting an evidence-based approach, the book emphasizes analytical and need-based studies to exclude any mimics. This book helps practice hepatologists and gastroenterologists for a systematic approach towards the most common cases.

The aim of this book is to expand the knowledge of physicians in training, experienced clinicians, in the field of hepatology. The expansion of liver transplantation within hepatology, and the demanding care that patients in liver transplant hospital services require, have changed the focus of clinical hepatology to a surgical subspecialty, laced with immunology. There is a vacuum in the knowledge of classical hepatology in the developing physicians, and medical students that this book aims to fill. In this context, the experience in hospital and outpatient medicine in the care of patients with liver disease in public hospitals represents a source of information that will be made available to the readers.
