When scheduling involves batching decisions as well, e. g. in the presence of (sequence dependent) setup times, difficult problems arise. The book presents a problem classification in the area of batching (including multi-level and parallel machine problems) and develops several exact and heuristic algorithms to solve them. Special attention is given to the discrete lotsizing and scheduling problem which turns out to be a special batching and scheduling problem in this context. The book also contains a comparison of constraint (logic) programming with mixed-integer programming solvers for batching problems.

In some manufacturing systems significant setups are required to change production from one type of products to another. The setups render the manufacturing system inflexible as for reacting to changes in demand patterns, hence inventories must be maintained to guarantee an acceptable customer service. In this environment, production scheduling faces a number of problems, and this work deals with mathematical models to support the scheduling decisions. Some more background and motivation is given in the following sections, as well as in a case description in Section 1. 3. The synopsis in Section 1. 4 outlines the topics of the work. 1. 1 Motivation of the Planning Problem Consider the production of metal sheets in a rolling mill. If the width of the next type of sheets is greater than the width of the preceding type, then the roll needs a setup: during the rolling process the edges of a sheet cause grooves on the rolls' surface, thus, the surface must be polished if a greater width is run next. Sheets with a smaller width can be run directly, without a setup. Another example in which setups are sequence dependent is a line where cars are sprayed: if the color of the paint changes, the cleaning of the tools requires a setup depending on the sequence of the colors. Only a small setup may be needed for changing from a light to a dark color, but a thorough cleaning of the tools is 2 CHAPTER 1.

Besides scheduling problems for single and parallel machines and shop scheduling problems the book covers advanced models involving due-dates, sequence dependent change over times and batching. Also multiprocessor task scheduling and problems with multi-purpose machines are discussed. The methods used to solve these problems are polynomial algorithms, dynamic programming procedures, branch-and-bound algorithms and local search heuristics. Also complexity issues are addressed.

Production Planning By Mixed Integer Programming written by Yves Pochet and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006-09-23 with Business & Economics categories.

This textbook provides a comprehensive modeling, reformulation and optimization approach for solving production planning and supply chain planning problems, covering topics from a basic introduction to planning systems, mixed integer programming (MIP) models and algorithms through the advanced description of mathematical results in polyhedral combinatorics required to solve these problems. Based on twenty years worth of research in which the authors have played a significant role, the book addresses real life industrial production planning problems (involving complex production structures with multiple production stages) using MIP modeling and reformulation approach. The book provides an introduction to MIP modeling and to planning systems, a unique collection of reformulation results, and an easy to use problem-solving library. This approach is demonstrated through a series of real life case studies, exercises and detailed illustrations. Review by Jakub Marecek (Computer Journal) The emphasis put on mixed integer rounding and mixing sets, heuristics in-built in general purpose integer programming solvers, as well as on decompositions and heuristics using integer programming should be praised... There is no doubt that this volume offers the present best introduction to integer programming formulations of lotsizing problems, encountered in production planning. (2007)

This book is dedicated to questions of production planning and scheduling activities both in general and in semiconductor manufacturing environments, which have the characteristics of high volume and high mixture. It explores topics such as shop models, work-in-process management, the treatment of setup times, basic techniques of lot batching and splitting, lot sizing and group technology approaches, as well as rescheduling questions. A number of directions for further research is suggested in the book, and a broad collection of references is provided.

This handbook provides full coverage of the most recent and advanced topics in scheduling, assembling researchers from all relevant disciplines to facilitate new insights. Presented in six parts, these experts provides introductory material, complete with tutorials and algorithms, then examine classical scheduling problems. Part 3 explores scheduling models that originate in areas such as computer science, operations research. The following section examines scheduling problems that arise in real-time systems. Part 5 discusses stochastic scheduling and queueing networks, and the final section discusses a range of applications in a variety of areas, from airlines to hospitals.
