Sven Hassel's iconic war novel about the Russian Front. 'An extraordinary book, which has captured the attention of all of Europe' - NEW YORK TIMES 'LEGION OF THE DAMNED is an incredible picture of totalitarianism, of stupefying injustice ... He is graphic, at times brilliantly so, but never brutal or bitter. He is, too, a first-rate storyteller' - WASHINGTON POST Convicted of deserting the German army, Sven Hassel is sent to a penal regiment on the Russian Front. He and his comrades are regarded as expendable, cannon fodder in the battle against the implacable Red Army. Outnumbered and outgunned, they fight their way across the frozen steppe... This iconic anti-war novel is a testament to the atrocities suffered by the lone soldier in the fight for survival. Sven Hassel's unflinching narrative is based on his own experiences in the German Army. He began writing his first novel, LEGION OF THE DAMNED in a prisoner of war camp at the end of the Second World War.

An operational history of the notorious Dirlewanger Brigade, culminating in its destruction in Budapest at the hands of the Red Army. One of the most notorious yet least understood body of troops that fought for the Third Reich during World War II was the infamous Sondereinheit Dirlewanger, or the “Dirlewanger Special Unit.” Formed initially as a company-sized formation in June 1940 from convicted poachers, it served under the command of SS-Obersturmführer Oskar Dirlewanger, one of the most infamous criminals in military history. First used to guard the Jewish ghetto in Lublin and support security operations carried out in occupied Poland by SS and Police forces, the unit was soon transferred to Belarus to combat the increasingly active Soviet partisan movement. After assisting in putting down the Warsaw Uprising during August–September 1944, by November of that year it had been enlarged and retitled as the 2. SS-Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger. One month later, it fought one of its most controversial actions near the town of Ipolysag, Hungary, now known by its Slovak name of Šahy, between 13 and 18 December 1944. As a result of its overly hasty and haphazard deployment, lack of heavy armament, and a confusing chain of command, it was virtually destroyed by two Soviet mechanized corps. Consequently, the Wehrmacht leadership blamed Dirlewanger and the performance of his troops for the encirclement of the Hungarian capital of Budapest during late December 1944 that led to the annihilation of its garrison two months later. The brigade’s defeat at Ipolysag also led to its compulsory removal from the front lines by General der Panzertruppe Hermann Balck and its eventual shipment to a rest area where it would be completely rebuilt, so thorough was its destruction. Despite its lackluster performance, the brigade was rebuilt once again and sent to East Prussia in February 1945, but never recovered from the thrashing it received at the hands of the 6th Guards Army in December.

The Legion of the Damned tells the story of Bennett Jeffries Doty, an American soldier and adventurer who enlisted in the Foreign Legion, fought in Syria, deserted, and was captured and then sentenced to death. Fate intervened in the form of an American foreign correspondent covering the fighting in Syria, whom Doty met just days before deserting, and it was no doubt owing to this meeting and the ensuing publicity that Doty managed to escape his plight, with his sentence reduced to an eight-year prison term in a French military prison. He eventually received a full pardon and ticket out of the Legion. Shortly after his release from prison and his return back to the United States in December of 1927, he published this book. An exciting and action-packed Foreign Legion memoir!

Porta narrowed his green, piggy eyes. - I shall tell you, dear fellow. If you are a Party member you will obey the Führer’s commandment that the good of the whole comes before that of the individual. And therefore, you will say something like this: “Brave warriors of the 27th Fire-and-Sword Regiment! To help you to fight even better for Führer and People, I, in my gratitude, will make you a gift of the bottle of rum that Herr Joseph Porta, by God’s Grace Obergefreiter, in his infinite goodness wished to give to my unworthy person. Wasn’t that just what you were wanting to say? Weren’t those very words trembling on the tip of your tongue? Dear fellow, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts, and now you may fuck off! Porta flung out his hand with a magnificent flourish, raised his cap and shouted, “Grüss Gott!” As soon as the wretched Nazi railwayman had gone, furiously gnashing his teeth, we opened the parcel. There were five bottles of wine, there was a whole roast of pork; there were two roast chickens, and there was... Sven Hassel was sent to a penal regiment in the German Wehrmacht where he served during the Second World War. When the war ended in 1945, he began writing Legion of the Damned during his time as a prisoner of war. With a brutal realism he describes the atrocities of war and the crimes of the nazis. He manages to give an important voice to the soldiers that gave their lives and were used as pawns that is both cynical and ingrained with an intelligent and coarse sense of humor. His fourteen World War II books, which draw on his own encounters and experiences as a soldier, have sold over 53 million copies worldwide and have been published in more than 50 countries.

A remarkable eyewitness account of the most brutal combat of the Pacific War, from Peleliu to Okinawa, this is the true story of R.V. Burgin, the real-life World War II Marine Corps hero featured in HBO®'s The Pacific. “Read his story and marvel at the man...and those like him.”—Tom Hanks When a young Texan named R.V. Burgin joined the Marines 1942, he never imagined what was waiting for him a world away in the Pacific. There, amid steamy jungles, he encountered a ferocious and desperate enemy in the Japanese, engaging them in some of the most grueling and deadly fights of the war. In this remarkable memoir, Burgin reveals his life as a special breed of Marine. Schooled by veterans who had endured the cauldron of Guadalcanal, Burgin’s company soon confronted snipers, repulsed jungle ambushes, encountered abandoned corpses of hara-kiri victims, and warded off howling banzai attacks as they island-hopped from one bloody battle to the next. In his two years at war, Burgin rose from a green private to a seasoned sergeant, fighting from New Britain through Peleliu and on to Okinawa, where he earned a Bronze Star for valor. With unforgettable drama and an understated elegance, Burgin’s gripping narrative stands alongside those of classic Pacific chroniclers like Robert Leckie and Eugene Sledge—indeed, Burgin was even Sledge’s platoon sergeant. Here is a deeply moving account of World War II, bringing to life the hell that was the Pacific War.

Danger was forgotten, death was forgotten, the war was forgotten. They only knew they had to kill... The figures in khaki were no longer soldiers, no longer men. Sven Hassel and his comrades are once more hurled into the ferocity of the frontline. The Eastern Front is a sight of unprecedented destruction. The soldiers there - the tank battalions of Hitler's penal regiments - are considered expendable by the German high command. Treated like animals, they learn to live like animals, to fight like beasts. The only other option is to die a bloody death... This is a gripping testament to the soldiers sacrificed on the Russian Front.
