Reducing CO2 emissions is a necessary subject due to the existing ecological problems. Many alternative energy sources can be used instead of fossil fuels. It is widely believed that solar energy can sustainably replace fossil fuel sources without harming the environment. These days, commercial and residential photovoltaic (PV) systems are extensively coming into the market due to the following advantages: (1) More affordable costs with respect to homeowners' economic situations and (2) Utilizing the roof of the buildings as the supporting structure, thereby eliminating land and direct structure expenses [1]. However, proper interfaces will need to be provided between these systems and the utility in order to maximize the benefits associated with them. Small battery energy storage systems (BESS) have demonstrated to be effective devices for proper interfacing between residential/commercial/industrial PV systems and utilities in order to provide uninterrupted and reliable power to the loads. This project focuses on the application of BESS in PV systems as the continuation of previous works based on 1) a state-space based battery energy storage system; [2], and 2) a simple and effective approach for peak load shaving using battery energy storage systems.[3] The grid-connected PV system with batteries (PV+BESS) containing DC/DC converter, AC/DC inverter, AC loads and BESS, is capable of simultaneous control of active power, reactive power, and DC link voltage. Continuing on the previous work, this project has proposed and verified a control strategy based on state-space model(s) of PV+BESS by utilizing an energy management strategy with the goal of peak-shaving, while considering batteries' degradation and ageing limits. Simulations have been performed in different battery capacity cases and the results have been compared with the simple approach described in [3]. The simulation is performed using Simulink/SimPowerSystems toolbox under Matlab, and the models are created based on several published research papers. PV+BESS control strategy was analyzed, and the results were simulated and verified in two different examples.

This guide covers battery energy storage systems for domestic or small commercial grid-connected solar photovoltaics (PV). It is intended for two audiences: -Customers. Information is provided to enable the benefits of energy storage systems to be assessed. The pros and cons of different system types are discussed, as well as the implications of different system sizes and operating regimes. -System designers and installers. Information is provided to enable the safe and effective design, specification and installation of energy storage systems. This guide focuses on grid-connected solar PV systems, although some principles also apply to other forms of energy generation. Systems that make use of any 'spare' storage capability available from an electric vehicle are not covered. The guide looks at the design, sizing and specification of energy storage systems that use established battery technologies to store solar surplus for use later in the day. Typical operating patterns and characteristics of these systems are also examined. Examples are given of how such systems can be configured and connected within a building, and the process for sizing batteries and other system components is examined.

Continuous cost reduction of photovoltaic (PV) systems and the rise of power auctions resulted in the establishment of PV power not only as a green energy source but also as a cost-effective solution to the electricity generation market. Various commercial solutions for grid-connected PV systems are available at any power level, ranging from multi-megawatt utility-scale solar farms to sub-kilowatt residential PV installations. Compared to utility-scale systems, the feasibility of small-scale residential PV installations is still limited by existing technologies that have not yet properly address issues like operation in weak grids, opaque and partial shading, etc. New market drivers such as warranty improvement to match the PV module lifespan, operation voltage range extension for application flexibility, and embedded energy storage for load shifting have again put small-scale PV systems in the spotlight. This Special Issue collects the latest developments in the field of power electronic converter topologies, control, design, and optimization for better energy yield, power conversion efficiency, reliability, and longer lifetime of the small-scale PV systems. This Special Issue will serve as a reference and update for academics, researchers, and practicing engineers to inspire new research and developments that pave the way for next-generation PV systems for residential and small commercial applications.

A grid connected photovoltaic (PV) system is taken, in which a storage device is used as a backup source. The energy storage system is used to make the intermittent PV power more dispatchable and stable. Here, the storage device is mainly taken as Ni-MH(Nickel metal hydride) battery, as it is more convenient to use in high power applications such as solar and wind systems because of its low cost and availability in large size. Finally the active power, reactive power, PCC current and PCC voltage is compared during the line to ground fault so that the performance comparison can be done in case of PV system and BESS based PV system to investigate that after the fault occurrence how faster the system returns to stable position from the unstable position. Hence it is found that in the BESS system based PV system the proposed controller acts better as compared to that of the PV system only.

Savings attributable to batteries were evaluated for three representative US utility service areas. The photovoltaic (PV) devices were assumed capable of exporting excess power to the utility grid, and the batteries, sited at the substation, were operated as a form of load-leveling utility storage. A cost-allocation model, SIMSTOR, was employed to determine utility fuel and capital cost savings resulting from the addition of batteries at selected PV penetration levels. These savings were compared against savings from batteries used alone. Battery storage capacities and discharge rates were varied. The effects of installing PV devices, with cumulative rated capacities amounting to about 20% of peak load at each of the three utilities, were evaluated. Results indicate that batteries and PV systems do not directly compete when attached to the electricity supply grid. Utility savings from the PV devices are primarily fuel savings, while those from the batteries are primarily savings in utility capacity. In some of the service areas, the addition of PV devices tended to sharpen rather than flatten the peaks in the utility's load curves. Batteries with higher discharge rates and larger storage capacities are favored. In a preliminary screening of candidate batteries for onsite grid-connected PV applications, it was determined that lead/acid and zinc/chlorine batteries are the leading contenders in the near term. Other contenders, in the intermediate-term and exploratory stages of development, include zinc/bromine and sodium/sulfur batteries, as well as redox systems for applications involving relatively long discharge periods.
