Following the economic depression of the early 1930s, antisemitism, whipped up by anti-alienist and fascist agitators, became a serious threat for British Jews. However, the British Jewish establishment - the Board of Deputies, the staff of "The Jewish Chronicle", etc. - refused to believe in the viability of British antisemitism and regarded it as an export from Central Europe, alien to Britain. After 1934, the British Union of Fascists, led by Oswald Mosley, became the main promoter of aggressive antisemitism. It was the Jewish population of London's East End who led the struggle against the fascist and antisemitic danger and formed defense organizations of their own, unsupported by the Jewish communal leadership. While in 1936, and later, it was impossible to ignore the rise of antisemitism in Britain, the leaders and spokesmen of the Jewish community resorted to a propaganda campaign and to self-criticism of "the Jews who rushed to the professions", they voiced anxiety about Jewish youth joining "extreme anti-fascists", and they opposed violent forms of struggle. In October 1936 it was the rank-and-file Jews, supported by non-Jewish workers and communists, who succeeded in thwarting a demonstration of the BUF in the East End.

In this fascinating and evocative book, Rosemary Taylor and Christopher Lloyd recall the extraordinary effect of wartime on the lives of the inhabitants of the East End. The Boer War and the First World War form the early part of the story but it is the momentous events of the Second World War that fill the body of the book. After the British defeat at Dunkirk and the fall of France, Hitler's Luftwaffe was within easy reach of London. The East End and the docks in particular were in the front line during the Blitz, and for five difficult years the local people faced the direct threat of German air attack. The book records their role in the world war and vividly brings back to life the everyday realities and intense atmosphere of those troubled times. The book describes the anxious initial efforts made to organize the defence of the East End in the early years of the confrontation. It goes on to record the most significant events of the time - air raid protection and the evacuation of children, the departure of men and women who went into the armed forces, the economic changes and dislocation, the Battle of Britain and the horrors and destruction of the Blitz, then the random terror of the flying bombs and the eventual victory celebrations. Rosemary Taylor and Christopher Lloyd have selected a fascinating collection of photographs from the Tower Hamlets local history archives to show the impact of war on this distinctive area of London. The work will serve as a memorial to an exceptional period in the recent past of the East End and its people.

In this gripping sequel to David Brown's "East End Boys," we follow Wolfe, Asher and their partner Billy Reid and their families through the Second World War. In the early days of the war, after enrolling in the Auxiliary Fire Brigade in East London, day by day they fight the raging fires as thousands of incendiaries and high explosives fall around them. Meanwhile their wives, Eva, Sarah and Esther, have joined the WVS, driving their van to badly bombed areas, serving sandwiches and hot tea to the fire-fighters, homeless and the various services, searching the rubble looking for survivors. In the skies above, Wolfe's eldest son Isaac flies his Spitfire through the fast, furious adrenalin pumping battle against the invading Luftwaffe. Later, Asher's eldest son Abraham becomes an officer and is sent to France where he and his men are part of the retreat to Dunkirk. Wolfe's other son Saul is badly beaten by a loan shark and card club owner Bull Burgess and his two cronies over a gambling debt. When Wolfe finds out that Burgess cheats at cards, he decides to do something about it. During the bombing, unscrupulous people take advantage property-owners are in the shelters by entering their homes and stealing from them. One such man is Spider Munro. But when he comes up against the East End Boys he meets his match. As a deserter in an army prison he has even more incentive for revenge against the three firemen. Through the following turbulent years the East End Boys and their children call on their unwavering faith in God to survive the horrors of a devastating war.

An East End Legacy is a memorial volume for William J Fishman, whose seminal works on the East End of London in the late nineteenth century have served as a vital starting point for much of the later work on the various complex web of relations in that quarter of the capital. A variety of leading scholars utilise the insight of Fishman’s work to present a wide range of insights into the historical characters and events of the East End. The book’s themes include local politics; anti-alienism, anti-Semitism and war; and culture and society. In pursuing these topics, the volume examines in great depth the social, political, religious and cultural changes that have taken place in the area over the past 120 years, many of which remain both significant and relevant. In addition, it illustrates East London’s links with other parts of the world including Europe and America and those territories "beyond the oceans." This book will prove valuable reading for researchers and readers interested in Victorian and twentieth century British history, politics and culture.

'Endlessly fascinating. . . White is such a brilliant historian' Mail on Sunday Lasting for six long years, the Blitz transformed life in the capital beyond recognition, marking a time of almost constant anxiety, disruption, deprivation and sacrifice for Londoners. With the capital the nation's frontline during the Second World War, by its end, 30,000 inhabitants had lost their lives. While much has been written about 'the Myth of the Blitz', its riveting social history has often been overlooked. Unearthing what it was actually like for those living through those tempestuous years, Jerry White paints a fascinating portrait of the daily lives of ordinary Londoners, telling the story through their own voices. 'As a history of the capital in wartime, it is probably unsurpassable' Sunday Telegraph 'An impressive history of the capital at war. . . White, an accomplished chronicler of London's history, tells it with brio and a confident mastery of the sources' Literary Review

The East End has always held a malign fascination for the general public. In this book James Morton looks at this phenomenon from the days of the unsolved murders committed by Jack the Ripper to the 1960s when the Kray Twins held the reins of the Underworld, to the present and how the structure of crimes and criminal gangs has changed. EAST END GANGLAND looks not only at the Twins but also at the influx of immigrant gangs of the 1900s, the powerful Chinese drug dealers of the 1920s, the racecourse gangs, the men who ran crime on the docks, and organised prostitution throughout the century to the major drug dealers of today.

Pustules and plague corpses in Smithfield. Women disguised in men's clothing. A shark in the Thames. London's East End has a history soaked in blood. The Great Plague of London can be traced to its streets; Jack the Ripper prowled here, as did the Ratcliffe Highway murderer and the gunmen of the famous Sidney Street siege. Communists, fascists, suffragettes and the Skeleton Army have all fought through the streets of the East End, before it weathered the worst that the Nazi bombers could throw at it during the dark days of the Blitz. Historically viewed as a 'den of iniquity', and once teeming with opium dens, bodysnatchers and paupers, this is a story of dreadful odds and of determination, filled with horror, grim British humour and hundreds of incredible years of history.
