The advent of the cannon many centuries ago added a new dimension to warfare, and soon became the weapon of choice of the Kings and Emperors. Since then artillery has evolved into a battle-winning factor, often being the determinant between success and failure. This book covers five great artillery battles fought in four continents over 136 years. The Battle of Gettysburg (1 to 3 Jun 1863) is the most 'written about' battle of the US Civil War. The Battle of Vimy Ridge (9 to 12 April 1917), which saw the Canadian Corps fight as one entity for the first time, commenced with the greatest artillery barrage in history (till then) - 983 guns! In the Battle of Bir Hacheim (Point 171) (27 May 1942) 2 Indian Field Regiment firing over 'open sights' knocked out 56 tanks of the German Afrika Korps, led by General (later Field Marshal) Erwin Rommel. The Battle of Chhamb (3 to 17 December 1971) recounts what was perhaps the toughest and most intensely fought battle of the Indo-Pakistan War. The Battles of Tololing and Tiger Hill fought during the Kargil Conflict in the summer of 1999 saw the Indian guns engaging targets at heights of 16000 feet!

Capt. Kamal Bakshi fought in the 1971 IndoPak War and went missing after the Battle of Chhambthe bloodiest battle of 1971. Although no one from his battalion had seen him get killed, no one had been able to locate his body. And so, the military declared him 'Missing, Believed Killed'the ambiguous status assigned to soldiers when their death cannot be confirmed. However, six years after the war, the Indian government changed its mind. The Ministry of External Affairs announced in Parliament that Indian intelligence agencies have reason to believe that Pakistan had not been truthful when it handed over the list of Indian POWs in its custody. It went on to state the names of at least forty Indian soldiers still believed to be in Pakistani custody and one of the names was Kamal Bakshi's. This book has been written by his nephew Shivalik Bakshi. It is his story, recreated from his letters, diaries, recollections of those who crossed paths with him and published accounts of the Battle of Chhamb.

Memorable War Stories is a collection of 27 war stories and incidents placing on record the exciting exploits of our own fliers of the Indian Air Force and the intrepid fighters of the Army and Navy operating in our own environment. All the stories/incidents recorded in the book are true and factually correct, and are based on research, first person accounts, and published stories carried by different newspapers and magazines over a period of time. Although most of the names of the crews have been clipped down to their squadron nicknames, nevertheless they will be quite identifiable to their colleagues and contemporaries. The book has been fictionalised to an extent to make it readable and bring in the human angle, but there is no compromise on the factual details. The war stories and the other incidents cover a wide spectrum beginning with the Kashmir operations and race the reader through the 1962 Sino-Indian Frontier War, the Twenty Two Fateful Days of the 1965 Indo-Pak Conflict, the Fourteen Days 1971 war, and not forgetting the Kargil Operation Vijay. The book has been written in an easy and fluid style which makes it immensely readable, and the simple language though with a defence flavour should find favour with the men-in-uniform as well as civilians. It is a welcome addition to the books on defence themes.

This book originated in the small green notepads ubiquitous among U.S. Army soldiers. As time wore on in Iraq, computers and printers became more accessible and I transferred my thoughts onto an external jump drive. When I had printer access, I would print these thoughts as portions of letters to my wife and parents, in part answering the inevitable question: What are you doing now? I thought the more thorough the descriptions I sent home, the more robust the care packages of Cajun-flavor beef jerky, Gatorade, and Gold Bond powder I would receive. My father, ever the careful historian and on the Army Staff at the time, organized these letters and tied them to the headline news and the Pentagon's contemporary appreciation of events. My wife, mother, and Aunts Margy and Nancy sent me more than my body weight in beef jerky, Gatorade mix, and other delectables. The idea of transferring these letters and thoughts into a book proved almost as daunting a task as fighting insurgents. I received a lot of encouragement to publish, but the one thing that always stuck with me was the idea that writing a book may help someone deploying to combat. It became my goal-in my own mind, my duty-to write an honest account of my experiences, thoughts, and feelings to help deploying combat leaders. As I reread this book with the luxury of hindsight, I am always amazed at some of the tactical mistakes we made. I often debated taking out sections of the book so as to not look foolish, "cherry," or "junior varsity." Each time, wise counsel reminded me that descriptions of evolutionary tactics are far more instructive than revisionist history ... we learn so much more from our mistakes. I learned an incredible amount tactically, emotionally, and psychologically during my time in Iraq. I consider the level of combat and danger I personally faced there as pretty standard for an infantryman in the Sunni Triangle. This book is not a collection of one hair-raising RPG ambush after the next, though they exist. Instead, it reflects the boredom, camaraderie, and moments of terror I experienced throughout my tour. It also discusses many of the leadership challenges, frustrations, and personal squabbles that affect units. I always strove to lead an organization that could rapidly adjust to the changing threat; hopefully, this book conveys the lessons we learned. The views expressed are my own and not those of the U.S. government, Department of Defense, or U.S. Army. This book is the product of so many people's hard work and sacrifice that I feel guilty putting my name on the cover. The first person I have to thank is my wife Kris, who has sustained me through eight years of marriage and countless deployments. I can never thank her enough for her love, care, support, and understanding while both living and writing this book. Our Army asks so much of our loved ones-they are the true patriots. Special thanks to my mother and father: their love, leadership, and sacrifices are awe inspiring. They are my heroes. Thanks go to Oscar and Meyer, amiable Dachshunds who provided great late-night-writing companionship-although their grammatical contributions were dubious at best. Thanks go to the platoon sergeants and commanders I have had through the years; I carry invaluable leadership lessons from each of them. To the Byers, Faunce, Panchot, and Paliwoda families, thank you for raising and nurturing such wonderful sons; I am a better man for having known each of them.
