Fix Bayonets written by John W. Thomason and has been published by Open Road Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-01-01 with History categories.

This collection of WWI sketches of the Fifth Marine Regiment is “forthright, unsparing, deeply felt but unsentimental, and reads like a house afire” (The Wall Street Journal). From a soldier who was there, here are first-hand accounts of combat and camaraderie during the Great War. In a series of stories and illustrations, Capt. John W. Thomason captures the bravery and gallantry of the leathernecks fighting the Germans in France—putting readers in the trenches, facing the staccato of rifle fire, feeling the pangs of starvation, and the demoralizing fatigue. This collection is a tribute to the men who lived and breathed the motto “Semper Fidelis”, or “Always Faithful”, those who made the ultimate sacrifice and those who made it out alive. “Fix Bayonets! is in the company of Tolstoy and Crane and Bierce in the literature of war. Indeed, I should leave Crane out of it . . . The Red Badge of Courage cannot stand the fierce sun of Fix Bayonets!” —Laurence Stallings, American playwright and veteran “Remains the single finest account of Americans in battle in World War I.” —The United States World War One Centennial Commission “Thomason brings life and energy to his account—and the spirited drawings—of what he saw.” —The Wall Street Journal

This fascinating third volume in the Britannia's Fist series will have you pondering how easily history could have been swayed differently. What if other countries had become involved in America’s Civil War? Historian Peter G. Tsouras presents the third installment in his Britannia’s Fist alternate history series. The winter of 1863 lowered a white curtain on the desperate struggle for North America. The United States and Great Britain fought each other to a bitter draw. On both sides of the Atlantic, the forges of battle glowed as they poured out new technologies of war. British and French aid transformed the ragged Confederate armies and filled them with new confidence. Both sides strained to be ready for the coming campaign season. Both sides seek to anticipate each other. The British strike suddenly at Hooker’s strung-out army in winter quarters in upstate New York in a brutal, swirling, late battle across frozen fields and streams. Besieged Portland shudders relentless assault. The French attack Fort Hudson on the Mississippi. At Lincoln’s direction, two great raids are launched at the United Kingdom itself as Russia enters the war on the side of the Union to raid the Irish Sea. These are only preliminaries to the great gathering of modernized armies and ironclad fleets, and with them are deadly submersibles and balloons. Battles rage from Maine to northern Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay, down to steamy Louisiana. And far away across the sea, Dublin stands siege as Russia simultaneously eyes Constantinople. For Americans (blue and gray), Britons, Irish, Frenchmen, and Russians, the summer of 1864 is the crescendo battle of destinies and dreams. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

The last few rays of a cold September sunset were streaming through the High Street of a large and populous village called Redford, in the county of Surrey, lighting up the pretty red-brick cottages and casting a deep shadow beyond the quaint and tumble-down old porch which led to the church. A few mellow shafts had slipped by it, and, struggling through the iron bars of a massive gate, travelled up a long gravel drive and cast a ruddy glow on the windows of a fine country mansion. In one of the rooms facing the sunset, a man and a woman were standing opposite one another, engaged in angry conversation, while outside, on the great staircase, the subject of their dispute, a boy of about eleven, was slowly making his way upward, stopping now and again to let his head drop upon his folded arms against the banisters, and sob as if his heart would break. At last, after many stops, he reached a landing midway up, and was just in the act of succumbing once more to his grief when a jeering and unsympathetic laugh from above caught his ear, and caused him to give a violent start. Instantly the lad dried his eyes, and choked back his sobs. Then, with a sudden gesture, as if of determination to forget his sorrow, he crossed the landing, and with his head now held proudly erect in the air, ran up the remaining stairs and was quickly out of sight.

Battle On 42nd Street written by Peter Monteath and has been published by NewSouth this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-11-01 with History categories.

At what point does the will to survive on the battlefield give way to bloodlust? The battle for Crete was at once the most modern and the most ancient of wars. For a week Australian and New Zealand forces were relentlessly hammered from the skies by the Luftwaffe and pursued across Crete by some of the most accomplished and best equipped forces Hitler could muster. On the morning of 27 May 1941, however, all that was about to change. When a unit of German mountain troops approached the Allies’ defensive line — known as 42nd Street — men from the Australian 2/7th and 2/8th Battalions and New Zealanders from several battalions counter-attacked with fixed bayonets. By the end, German bodies were strewn across the battlefield. Acclaimed historian Peter Monteath draws on recollections and records of Australian, New Zealand, British and German soldiers and local Cretans to reveal the truth behind one of the bloodiest battles of the Second World War. 'This is military history at its best: deeply researched, powerfully told and proving that the essence of war is men killing other men.' — Joan Beaumont
