Some places in this world are still wild, remote and untouched. The outer coast of Vancouver island is one such remarkable place. Author and explorer John Kimantas takes you through this phenomenal stretch of coastline, both by foot and by water, in unparalleled detail. It includes the type of detail that made his first series of guide books, the Wild Coast series, the quintessential resource for information on the most remote locations on the BC coast. This is the heir to that series, updated to include changes such as the Maa-nulth Treaty, the initiatives of the BC Marine Trails Network and other political, environmental and social changes that are continuing to shape these lands. Through maps, photography and description, The BC Coast Explorer series provides the building blocks for the adventure of a lifetime. By foot or paddle, this volume will take you to places rarely seen and yet too beautiful to miss. Covered in detail, feature by feature, are north Vancouver Island and Cape Scott, Brooks Peninsula and all five West Coast Sounds: Quatsino, Kyuquot, Nootka, Clayoquot and Barkley sounds. Included are launches, points of interest, campsites and all the necessary details to get you there. The toughest part will be deciding where to go.

Rugged yet serene, the south and east coasts of Vancouver Island are unlike anywhere else. Wave-sculpted rocks, sea caves and fjords, old-growth forests, incredible wildlife, and white, sandy beaches make this an unbeatable destination. From a veteran kayaker and outdoors expert, who has explored the BC coastline himself, comes this must-have collection of full-colour maps, all from a paddler's perspective. This large-book format is easier to use and stow than bulky charts and unwieldy roll-up maps. Kimantas himself remarks that his life would have been much easier had one of these been available for his own kayak trips! The features and attractions included in these maps are numerous. You'll see all the campsites, rest areas, launch sites, anchorages, private marinas, government wharves, ferry terminals, and lighthouses, as well as the possible hazards of each area. Also included are the key places to see killer whales, grizzlies, sea lions, and birds and to explore heritage sites, ruins, sunken ships, trails, and parks. Colour photographs right on the maps provide visual clues and added beauty. Volume 1, South BC Coast and East Vancouver Island This volume provides an overview of British Columbia's south coast from Victoria to Port McNeill, and from Howe Sound to the Broughton Islands. Volume 2, West Vancouver Island This volume provides an overview of West Vancouver Island from Sooke to Port Hardy.

This is your guide to dozens of spectacular and often hidden beaches on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island between Qualicum and the Malahat. While some of them are well used by people living nearby, many are virtually impossible to find without combing through official maps and back-road guides. From tiny rocky coves to broad sandy beaches, these public-access spots are enormously diverse. Just as important as finding these spots is knowing what to expect. Thus each location is accompanied by detailed information that any beach explorer should know before setting out. Is the beach a few level steps from a vehicle or down a high, steep bank? Is the beach suitable for children? Large groups? Kayakers? All of these questions and many more are answered in this book, which includes Theo's hand-drawn maps, photographs and artwork. Watch sea lions in the winter (Higginson Road) Paint one of the few great views of Mt. Arrowsmith--go before noon for dramatic light (Rowland Road) Head to the most child-friendly beach between Crofton and the Malahat (Cherry Point Nature Park) Splash and swim in warm water over sand (Benwalden Road) Refresh your pleasure in the shore and head out to picnic, play, launch kayaks, watch winter storms or just enjoy the waves.

Islands Of Truth written by Daniel Clayton and has been published by UBC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-11-01 with Social Science categories.

In Islands of Truth, Daniel Clayton examines a series of encounters with the Native peoples and territory of Vancouver Island in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Although he focuses on a particular region and period, Clayton also meditates on how representations of land and people, and studies of the past, serve and shape specific interests, and how the dawn of Native-Western contact in this part of the world might be studied 200 years later, in the light of ongoing struggles between Natives and non-Natives over land and cultural status. Between the 1770s and 1850s, the Native people of Vancouver Island were engaged by three sets of forces that were of general importance in the history of Western overseas expansion: the West's scientific exploration of the world in the Age of Enlightenment; capitalist practices of exchange; and the geopolitics of nation-state rivalry. Islands of Truth discusses these developments, the geographies they worked through, and the stories about land, identity, and empire stemming from this period that have shaped understanding of British Columbia's past and present. Clayton questions premises underlying much of present B.C. historical writing, arguing that international literature offers more fruitful ways of framing local historical experiences. Islands of Truth is a timely, provocative, and vital contribution to post-colonial studies.

When the Hudson's Bay Company decided to establish its new Pacific coast headquarters at Fort Victoria on Vancouver Island in 1843, the Island was a pristine paradise--or an isolated wilderness, depending on one's point of view--that had sustained its First Nations inhabitants for millennia. It was one of the last places to be discovered and settled by Europeans in North America. It was Scots who came to the Island to manage the Company's business in Fort Victoria, engaging in the fur trade and establishing coal-mining ventures around what is now Nanaimo, where "black diamonds" were found in abundance. From founding father James Douglas and other high-placed Company men to the humble miners from Orkney and Ayrshire who were brought over on harsh voyages around Cape Horn to work Nanaimo's mines, the Scottish influence on the young Colony of Vancouver Island was indelible. Nanaimo author and historian Jan Peterson focuses on events and people who sparked settlement and growth in BC's first Crown Colony over six critical years, 1848 to 1854, and delves deep into the roots of the Island's Scottish presence, tracing the lives of such pioneers as Dr. William Tolmie, Robert Dunsmuir and their descendants.

“Time did not exist; or if it did it did not mater. Our world then was both wide and narrow—wide in the immensity of the sea and mountain; narrow in that the boat was very small, and we lived and camped, explored and swam in a little realm of our own making...” This is the fascinating true adventure story of a woman who packed her five children onto a twenty-five-foot boat and explored the coastal waters of British Columbia summer after summer in the 1920s and 1930s. Acting single-handedly as skipper, navigator, engineer and of course, mother, Muriel Wylie Blanchet saw her crew through exciting—and sometimes perilous—encounters with fog; rough seas, cougars, bears and whales, and did so with high spirits and courage. On these pages an independent woman with a deep respect for the native cultures of a region, and a refreshing wonderment about the natural world, comes to life. In The Curve of Time, she has left us with a sensitive and lyrically written account of their journeys and a timeless travel memoir not to be missed.
