Das Werk des Nürnberger Autors Sigmund von Birken (1626–1681) stellt eine Besonderheit in der deutschen Literaturgeschichte dar. Als einziger Berufsschriftsteller im Barock lebte Birken ausschließlich von publizistischer Tätigkeit, das Spektrum seines Schaffens ist vielgestaltig wie bei keinem anderen Autor seiner Zeit. Niemand sonst verfügte über ein so weit gespanntes Netz von literarischen Verbindungen. Nur er war gleichermaßen Dichter erotischer Schäferlyrik wie auch geistlicher Autor, nur er prominenter Verfasser monumentaler Geschichtswerke wie auch ›Literaturmanager‹ im Hintergrund. Ungeachtet dessen wurde Birkens Bedeutung bis in unsere Zeit nur am Rande wahrgenommen, ein vollständiges Werkverzeichnis existierte noch über 300 Jahre nach dem Tod des Dichters nicht. Die Morphologie des Birkenschen Werks bibliographiert das Schaffen des Autors erstmals mit dem Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Nach einem biographischen Überblick werden einleitend methodologische und überlieferungsgeschichtliche Fragen geklärt. Das gedruckte Werk wird in Beziehung zu etwa 10.000 Manuskriptseiten und über 2.000 Briefen aus dem Nachlass Birkens gesetzt. Das Schriftenverzeichnis wird um ein Vielfaches vermehrt und Birken als anonymer oder pseudonymer Verfasser zahlreicher Auftragsarbeiten identifiziert. Innere Werkzusammenhänge, literarische Formen und Personenkonstellationen werden durch Register erschlossen.

This is an English translation of Schelling's Ideas for a Philosophy of Nature (first published in 1797 and revised in 1803), one of the most significant works in the German tradition of philosophy of nature and early nineteenth-century philosophy of science. It stands in opposition to the Newtonian picture of matter as constituted by inert, impenetrable particles, and argues instead for matter as an equilibrium of active forces that engage in dynamic polar opposition to one another. In the revisions of 1803 Schelling incorporated this dialectical view into a neo-Platonic conception of an original unity divided upon itself. The text is of more than simply historical interest: its daring and original vision of nature, philosophy, and empirical science will prove absorbing reading for all philosophers concerned with post-Kantian German idealism, for scholars of German Romanticism, and for historians of science.
