Der vorliegende Band blickt ein Jahrhundert zurück auf das damalige ökonomische Denken im deutschsprachigen Raum. In der Zeit um den Ersten Weltkrieg befand sich die etablierte Nationalökonomie in einer Krise – diskreditiert als apologetische Ordnungswissenschaft des Kaiserreichs, gelähmt durch Kontroversen über Methoden, Werturteile und Stellenbesetzungen, zersplittert in unvereinbare und wenig zugängliche Begriffswelten. Hierfür bieten mehrere Kapitel des Bandes eindrucksvolle Belege, z.B. anhand der Beteiligung von Volkswirten an geopolitischen und kriegswirtschaftlichen Planungen und Entscheidungen, anhand zentraler Streitfelder im Verein für Socialpolitik sowie anhand des Niedergangs der Nationalökonomie an der Wiener Universität. Es gab zu jener Zeit jedoch auch eine Fülle von Außenseitern, die beachtliche Beiträge zum ökonomischen Denken lieferten. Andere Beiträge erinnern an solche weithin vergessenen Denker, wie etwa Walther Rathenau, Oskar Stillich und Georg von Charasoff.

Am 14. Oktober 1915 trat Bulgarien auf der Seite der Mittelmächte in den Ersten Weltkrieg ein, was letztlich zu großen Verlusten an Menschenleben, aber auch an Gebieten führte. Der 100. Wiederkehr dieses tragischen Datums war 2015 eine Tagung im Haus Wittgenstein gewidmet, deren Ergebnisse nun in diesem Band vorliegen. Insgesamt acht Beiträge behandeln die Vorgeschichte des Kriegseintritts, die Beziehungen Bulgariens zu seinen Nachbarn und zu Österreich-Ungarn sowie die Rezeption in österreichischen Schulbüchern und Ausstellungen. On 14 October 1915, Bulgaria entered World War I on the side of the Central Powers, which ultimately led to great losses of human life, but also of territories. The 100th anniversary of this tragic date was the subject of a conference in 2015 at Haus Wittgenstein, the results of which are now available in this volume. A total of eight contributions deal with the prehistory of the entry into the war, Bulgaria's relations with its neighbours and with Austria-Hungary, as well as its representation in Austrian educational textbooks and exhibitions.

Narratives of War considers the way war and battle are remembered and narrated across space and time in Europe in the twentieth century. The book reflects on how narratives are generated and deployed, and on their function as coping mechanisms, means of survival, commemorative gestures, historical records and evidence. The contributions address such issues as the tension and discrepancy between memory and the official chronicling of war, the relationship between various individuals’ versions of war narratives and the ways in which events are brought together to serve varied functions for the narrators and their audiences. Drawing upon the two World Wars, the Spanish Civil War and the ex-Yugoslav wars, and considering narrative genres that include film, schoolbooks, novels, oral history, archives, official documents, personal testimony and memoirs, readers are introduced to a range of narrative forms and examples that highlight the complexity of narrative in relation to war.
