The dragon's wings stretched, stretched like a ship's sail unfurling - and cut through power lines on the other side of the street. Electricity crackled and sparks flew as the lines came down. I watched, frozen in terror as it turned towards my house and pulled back its head in a roar of attack.

This book will make your blood boil. It is the almost unbelievable account of Christchurch businessman Dave Henderson's five year battle with the Inland Revenue Department. It tells of a government department that is out of control, with little respect for the law and common decency. What started as a routine GST tax return, seeking a sizeable refund, turned into a nightmare. The IRD assessed Mr Henderson's company for a million dollars, refused to explain the basis for the assessments and drove him into bankruptcy. Determined to resist the IRD's bullying tactics, Dave Henderson withstood its continued efforts to drive him further under. This book tells that story. It describes, in graphic detail, the actions, evasions and convolutions practised by a department with almost limitless resources and no-one to monitor its behaviour.

This is a book about a child who is afraid of the dark. The book follows the little boy as he tells the reader all about the approaching darkness one evening, revealing his fear as he goes to bed, showing shapes in his bedroom that look like monsters (which change into ordinary things when he switches the light on). When the boy goes on a camping trip, he comes to realize that the dark has its place, and perhaps isn't so terrible after all. After all, it's only when it's truly dark, that you can see the stars. With a playful, clever and beautiful use of laser-cut holes, the book shows shadows getting bigger and taking over the boy's world, the dark bedroom shapes looking like monsters, and then transforming, in the turn of a page, to be just ordinary things in the boy's bedroom, and a breath-taking scene of hundreds of stars in the night sky.

Anti-terrorism is fast becoming an integral part of policing in the United States. To meet the unique challenges posed by the threat of terrorism, new skill sets are being added to the traditional functions of professional police organizations. This is happening without much assistance from academia. Professional organizations like the International Association of Chiefs of Police and sections of the Department of Justice have attempted to fill the void, but the law enforcement community still requires guidance via sound empirical research if they are to succeed in meeting this threat to public safety. After all, the threat of terrorism in the United States is not new, it has only gained prominence due to world events. Police executives are being forced to ask the most basic of questions to assess the threat of terrorism in their jurisdictions. Simply put, they need to know of whom they should be afraid. The wide range of unique terrorist groups operating in the United States today, all with very specific goals and tactics, makes the correct identification of the threat the key component to developing an effective anti-terrorism strategy. This question of who can be addressed through the employment of police skills already possessed by professional police organization, such as surveillance and the use of informants. Group identification is only the first, albeit most crucial, step in evaluating local threat. The identification of which groups are predicted to act, and the discovery of why these groups are feared, is also key to developing a true understanding of terrorism. The ultimate value of this research project to policy makers is the illustration of the fact that the answer to the question, Do I have an effective local anti-terrorism - 10 - program? is addressed by first answering the question, Who do I think is the local threat, and why?

This is a witty, off-the-wall guide to the rules of modern cricket, as if written by a very patient but understanding friend. Writer Iain Macintosh explains how cricket works and why is it so popular, and reveals the history of the game. He guides the novice through the basic rules of the sport in a bouncy, easy-to-fathom style, but also explains the fast-changing pace of the modern game that has made it even more compelling. If you've ever wondered what a Barmy Army is and how you sign up, or even if you've just wanted someone to sit you down and explain that whole LBW thing, this book is all you ever needed to know about cricket, but were too afraid to ask.
