In From Sea-Bathing to Beach-Going B. J. Barickman explores how a narrow ocean beachfront neighborhood and the distinctive practice of beach-going invented by its residents in the early twentieth century came to symbolize a city and a nation. Nineteenth-century Cariocas (residents of Rio) ostensibly practiced sea-bathing for its therapeutic benefits, but the bathing platforms near the city center and the rocky bay shore of Flamengo also provided places to see and be seen. Sea-bathing gave way to beach-going and sun-tanning in the new beachfront neighborhood of Copacabana in the 1920s. This study reveals the social and cultural implications of this transformation and highlights the distinctive changes to urban living that took place in the Brazilian capital. Deeply informed by scholarship about race, class, and gender, as well as civilization and modernity, space, the body, and the role of the state in shaping urban development, this work provides a major contribution to the social and cultural history of Rio de Janeiro and to the history of leisure.

Brazilian Beach Systems written by Andrew D. Short and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-07-19 with Science categories.

This book is about the more than 4,000 beach systems that form most of the 9000 km long Brazilian coast. It focuses on the beaches of each of the seventeen coastal states and three oceanic islands, their nature, morphodynamics and status. It is a must for anyone who wants to know more about this great coast and its beach systems. This is the first book ever written about the beach systems of Brazil, and actually the very first about the beaches of an entire country. The Brazilian coast extends from the mighty Amazon River and its muddy shores in the north to one of the world’s longest sandy beaches in the southern Rio Grande do Sul. It contains every beach type from wave to tide-dominated which range in size from small embayed beaches to long barrier beaches. The book is written by leading Brazilian academics and researchers and aims at the university level market, as well as coastal scientists, engineers and managers. Standard scientific terminology is used to describe the coast and its beaches. It is illustrated with more than 400 original figures and serves as a benchmark text on the Brazilian coast.

The Book Of Rio written by Cesar Cardoso and has been published by Comma Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-12 with Fiction categories.

It’s the city the rest of the world descends on to party…. whether for the spectacular annual Carnival, the sun-kissed beaches, the World Cup, or, in 2016, the Olympics. It’s also a place that’s sadly become synonymous with some of the excesses of partying, the dark underbelly that accompanies any urban hedonist’s destination. But these are just two images of Rio. There are countless others: opulent seat of two former empires; stronghold of brutal, twentieth-century dictatorships; sprawling metropolis stretched between stunning mountain tops and equally stunningeconomic extremes – from the affluence of neighbourhoods like Leblon and Ipanema, to the overcrowded slums in the foothills, the favelas. This anthology brings together ten short stories that go beyond the postcards and snapshots, and introduce us to real residents of Rio – the cariocas: young hopefuls training to be the next stars of samba, exhausted labourers press-ganged into meeting an impossible construction deadline (the nation’s pride being at stake), bored call-girls, nostalgic drag queens, married couples having petty middle-class domestics…. These are characters who’ve developed a deep understanding of Rio’s contradictions, a way of living with the grey areas – between the grime and the glitz – that make Rio the ‘marvellous city’ it is.

Popularly known as Rio, or 'the City that never sleeps', Rio de Janeiro, the capital of the State of Rio de Janeiro, is vibrant and full of life. It is Brazil's most famous and second largest City after São Paulo. Rio is known for many things: it is the third largest Metropolis in the whole of South America, one of the top visited Cities in the world, and every tourist's dream destination.Rio de Janeiro is an unforgettable City. It is littered with plenty of beaches, breathtaking mountains, striking architecture, and lush vegetation. From the famous Ipanema and Copacabana beaches; where playing, swimming, strolling, and sunbathing are just but a few of the day's activities, to the county's and world's largest Art Deco statue; Christ the Redeemer, perched elegantly on Corcovado Mountain, and to the city's unforgettable annual Carnival celebrations marked with extravaganzas of feasting, music, dance, and costumed revelry, you will never want to get out of Rio! And most significant, the people of Rio; Cariocas, are warm, welcoming, and truly lovable. No wonder there is a widespread adage that 'it's easier to gain entry into Rio than to want to exit it'.
