We report the first measurement of the double-spin asymmetry ALT for charged pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep inelastic electron scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target. The kinematics focused on the valence quark region, 0.16 x 0.35 with 1.4 Qsup2/sup 2.7 GeVsup2/sup. The corresponding neutron AsubLT/sub asymmetries were extracted from the measured sup3/supHe asymmetries and proton/sup3/supHe cross section ratios using the effective polarization approximation. These new data probe the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function gsub 1T/subsupq/sup and therefore provide access to quark spin-orbit correlations. Our results indicate a positive azimuthal asymmetry for?sup-

The double spin asymmetry[sigma][sub et]/[sigma][sub 0] has been measured in[pi][sup -] electro-production using a polarized electron beam and a polarized ND[sub 3] target, and using a CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). The electron beam was polarized using a GaAs-cathode and the target was polarized via Dynamic Nuclear Polarization. The beam polarization was around 70% and the target polarization was between 10 and 20 percent. The data at 2.5 GeV beam energy and two different magnetic field settings (2250 A and -1500 A) were collected in Hall B at Jefferson Lab in the Fall of 1998. The e[pi][sup -] channel was selected using the missing mass technique and applying a cut around the proton peak (0.78 GeV[sup 2]

In this thesis I discuss the first measurement of the beam-target double-spin asymmetry ALT for charged pion electroproduction in deep inelastic electron scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target. These data were taken between October 2008 to February 2009 using a 5.9 GeV polarized electron beam at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility Experimental Hall A. The kinematics focused on the valence quark region, 0.16

We present studies of single-spin asymmetries for neutral pion electroproduction in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of 5.776 GeV polarized electrons from an unpolarized hydrogen target, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. A substantial sin [Phi]h amplitude has been measured in the distribution of the cross section asymmetry as a function of the azimuthal angle [Phi]h of the produced neutral pion. The dependence of this amplitude on Bjorken x and on the pion transverse momentum is extracted with significantly higher precision than previous data and is compared to model calculations.

We have measured the moment A{sup sin?}{sub LU} corresponding to the polarized electron beam-spin asymmetry in SIDIS. A{sup sin?}{sub LU} is a twist-3 quantity providing information about quark-gluon correlations. Data were taken with the CLAS Spectrometer at Jefferson Lab using a 5.498 GeV longitudinally polarized electron beam and an unpolarized liquid hydrogen target. All three pion channels (pi, pi° and pi−) were measured simultaneously over a large range of kinematics within the virtuality range Q2 ̃1.0-4.5 GeV2. The observable was measured with good statistical precision over a large range of z, P{sub T}, x{sub B}, and Q2, which permits comparison with several reaction models. The discussed measurements provide an upgrade in statistics over previous measurements, and serve as the first evidence for the negative sign of the?− sin? Moment.

Recent measurements from the HERMES and SMC collaborations show a remarkably large azimuthal single-spin asymmetries AUL and AUT of the proton in semi-inclusive pion leptoproduction[gamma]*(q)p[yields][pi]X. We show that final-state interactions from gluon exchange between the outgoing quark and the target spectator system lead to single-spin asymmetries in deep inelastic lepton-proton scattering at leading twist in perturbative QCD; i.e., the rescattering corrections are not power-law suppressed at large photon virtuality Q[sup 2] at fixed x[sub bj]. The existence of such single-spin asymmetries requires a phase difference between two amplitudes coupling the proton target with J[sub P][sup z]=[+-] 1/2 to the same final-state, the same amplitudes which are necessary to produce a nonzero proton anomalous magnetic moment. We show that the exchange of gauge particles between the outgoing quark and the proton spectators produces a Coulomb-like complex phase which depends on the angular momentum L[sup z] of the proton's constituents and is thus distinct for different proton spin amplitudes. The single-spin asymmetry which arises from such final-state interactions does not factorize into a product of distribution function and fragmentation function, and it is not related to the transversity distribution[delta]q(x, Q) which correlates transversely polarized quarks with the spin of the transversely polarized target nucleon.

We report recent results from Jefferson Lab Hall A "Neutron Transversity" experiment (E06-010). Transversely polarized target single-spin asymmetry AUT and beam-target double-spin asymmetry A{sub LT} have been measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) reactions on a polarized neutron (3He) target. Collins-type and Sivers-type asymmetries have been extracted from A{sub UT} for charged pion SIDIS productions, which are sensitive to quark transversity and Sivers distributions, correspondingly. Double spin asymmetry A{sub LT} is sensitive to a specific quark transverse momentum dependent parton distribution (TMD), the so-called "transverse helicity" (g{sub 1T}) distributions. In addition, target single-spin asymmetries A{sub y} in inclusive electron scattering on a transversely polarized 3He target in quasi-elastic and deep inelastic kinematics were also measured in Hall A.
