This is a revealing look at the events and personalities that defined the Beat Generation, drawing on over three decades of research. Beatniks: A Guide to an American Subculture gets readers past the caricature of the "beatnik" as a goateed, beret-wearing, bongo-playing poseur, drawing on extensive research to show just how profound an impact the beats had on American culture, politics, and literature. Beatniks conveys the complexity, influences, events, and places that shaped the Beat Generation from the late 1940s to the cusp of the 1960s. The book also features a series of essays on specific aspects of the subculture, as well as interviews with Beat Generation luminaries like Allen Ginsberg, Ann Charters, Roy Harper and Michael McClure. Throughout, readers will meet an extraordinary gallery of people both famous—Jack Kerouac, William Burroughs, Neal Cassady—and lesser known but no less fascinating, including Kenneth Patchen, Lord Buckley, Mort Sahl, Jack Micheline, Lew Welch, Joan Vollmer Adams, and Lenore Kandel. Also included is a detailed glossary with the origins and meanings of the beat lingo.

1995, and at a party in Bedford, Mary meets Jack and Neal, a pair of hipsters and self - confessed 'Beats' stuck (un)squarely in the sixties. After a 'Beat (not - quite) Happening' at the local library, the three of them (and Neal's cat Koko) set off in Mary's Vauxhall on a road trip to Brighton in search of literary fame and fortune. But, this is neither the time nor the place for free love, uncomplicated sex and unrestrained cool - this is 1990s Britain and everything comes with a price . . .

BEATSPOLITATION Today we would call the sensationalizing of the cultural phenomenon known as the beat generation to sell books and movies, Beatsploitation. What you won't be reading in this volume are lost or overlooked classics of Beat Lit. Don't expect to find books the caliber of On the Road, Go, Junky or Last Exit to Brooklyn. The books herein were written to cash in on the beat movement... Although the writers of these books never achieved any literary grandeur, it shouldn't be inferred that they didn't have beatnik cred. Indeed, all three of the authors lived in that milieu-Coons and Golightly in Greenwich Village and Geis in Venice, California. These books don't have any literary pretension of defining what the beat movement was, but rather they reflect the places and period in which beatniks were prevalent. This fact doesn't make these books any less worth the attention of the student of the beat generation. Indeed more can be learned about the reaction of the public to the beatniks than by reading the entire oeuvre of authors such as Kerouac or Ginsberg... -from "How JFK Killed the Beatniks" by Jeff Vorzimmer

The Beat Movement, which first rose to attention in 1955, has often been viewed by critics as an urban phenomenon --the product of a postwar-youth culture with roots in the cities of New York and San Francisco. This study examines another side of the Beat Movement: its strong desire for a reconnection with nature. Although each took a different path in attaining this goal, the writers considered here--Gary Snyder, Jack Kerouac, Lew Welch, and Michael McClure--sought a new and closer connection to the natural world. These four writers, along with many of their counterparts in the Beat era, provided a crucial spark that helped to ignite the environmental movement of the 1970s and provided the foundation for the development of the current "Deep Ecology" worldview.
