Al-Munqidz min adh-Dhalal adalah salah satu dari sekian banyak karya Imam al-Ghazali yang terkenal. Ini adalah buku autobiografi, tepatnya autobiografi pemikiran. Lewat buku ini, pembaca diberikan gambaran tentang sejarah pencarian Imam al-Ghazali terhadap kebenaran, juga gambaran lika-liku pencariannya yang heroik. Buku ini ditulis di penghujung hidup Imam al-Ghazali, pasca penulisan Ihya’ ‘Ulumuddin. Dengan gaya penulisan yang singkat, padat, dan menawan, ia mengklasifikasikan empat golongan penjamin kebenaran: teolog, kaum batiniyah, filsuf, dan sufi. Menurutnya, kebenaran tidak mungkin keluar dari empat golongan ini. Mula-mula ia memasuki ilmu kalam, tahap kedua mendalami epistemologi filsafat, ketiga mengikuti ajaran batiniyah, dan terakhir menempuh cara sebagaimana kaum sufi. Pengetahuan indra (filsuf) dan rasional (teolog-filsuf), juga pengetahuan yang diperoleh dari imam yang ma’sum (batiniyah), sama-sama ringkih, tak mampu mengobati penyakit pesimisme yang diderita oleh Imam al-Ghazali. Adapun pengetahuan para kaum sufi terhindar dari cela. Ia pun berlabuh di situ hingga akhir hayat. Tersiar kabar bahwa di lokus sufisme ini, ia telah mencapai derajat paling tinggi, yakni dianugerahi kedudukan sebagai sultannya wali-wali Allah Swt., dengan gelar Quthbul ‘Ilm. Sehingga, dengan tegas ia menjamin bahwa kebenaran yang ia peluk bersifat mutlak.
