Sand Bed Friction Factors For Oscillatory Flows written by Philip Vitale and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1979 with Frictional resistance (Hydrodynamics). categories.

Published data from the Carstens, Neilsen, and Altinbilek (4) oscillatory water tunnel tests are plotted as friction factor versus Reynolds number. These data, for three sand sizes and for both rippled and flat movable beds, are analyzed in a manner analogous to early treatment of flow in rough pipes that produced the Moody diagram. Laminar, transitional, and turbulent regimes are defined. The turbulent regime data are further analyzed to find the relative roughness, a combination of ripple height, grain size, and bottom particle displacement, which will predict the friction factor. The ripple heights for the 0.585 mm sand increased with increasing Reynolds number while the ripple heights for the 0.297 mm and 0.190 mm sands decreased with increasing Reynolds number. Considering rippled beds only, the friction factor is proportional to the grain size divided by the square root of the Reynolds number. Grain roughness contributes 64% to 100% of the total bottom roughness, based on the relative roughness term.

Modelling And Analysis Of Fine Sediment Transport In Wave Current Bottom Boundary Layer written by Liqin Zuo and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-06-19 with Science categories.

The evolution and utilization of estuarine and coastal regions are greatly restricted by sediment problems. This thesis aims to better understand fine sediment transport under combined action of waves and currents, especially in the wave-current bottom boundary layer (BBL). Field observations, experimental data analysis, theoretical analysis and numerical models are employed. Silt-dominated sediments are sensitive to flow dynamics and the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) increase rapidly under strong flow dynamics. This research unveils several fundamental aspects of silty sediment, i.e., the criterion of the incipient motion, the SSC profiles and their phase-averaged parameterization in wave-dominated conditions. An expression for sediment incipient motion is proposed for silt-sand sediment under combined wave and current conditions. A process based intra-wave 1DV model for flow-sediment dynamics near the bed is developed in combined wave-current conditions. The high concentration layer (HCL) was simulated and sensitivity analysis was carried out by the 1DV model on factors that impact the SSC in the HCL. Finally, based on the 1DV model, the formulations of the mean SSC profile of silt-sand sediments in wave conditions were proposed. The developed approaches are expected to be applied in engineering practice and further simulation.

This book represents the efforts of over a hundred individuals who planned and executed the NSTS field experiments, analyzed the billions of data points, and distilled their findings and insights into the summaries found here. Because these experiments were of a scope that will seldom, if ever, be duplicated, and because the program brought together many of the foremost field experimentalists in this country, we all felt from the beginning that it was important to preserve the outcome. This was done in two ways. First, the raw data were made available to any interested investigator within 18 months of the completion of each experiment. Secondly, both the methodology of the experiments and the findings from them were codified in the form of a monograph. This book is that result. I have had the occasion recently (Sediments '87 Proceedings, Vol. 1, pp. 642-651) to assess the NSTS performance. I found that we made giant strides in our understanding of the surf zone hydrodynamics --far more than our fondest expectations at the beginning. We were able to do less than we had hoped about the response of the sediment, largely because of a limited ability to measure it at a point. As I reported in the Sediments '87 assessment, we established a new state of the art in measurement techniques and we demonstrated the effectiveness of large, multi-investigator, instrument-intensive experiments for studying nearshore processes.
