Excerpt from Beef Production in the East There is a great need for more beef cattle on Eastern farms. The advantages to be gained in the development of the enterprise here are each year becoming better known. To increase the number of beef animals does not mean that the dairy herds should be diminished, for we cannot get along with a less amount of milk, butter or dairy products, and an increasing amount will each year be required. The production of milk and the successful maintenance of a dairy herd require conditions not to be found on the majority of Eastern farms. The location must be favorable for ship-ping or convenient to collecting stations. The land must lend itself to intensive cultivation economically. Buildings and equipment of the most modern type are required in order to conform with necessary sanitary conditions imposed to properly protect the health of the communities to which the product is shipped, and to keep to a minimum the expense for labor which must be watched so closely in this enterprise. Excerpt from Beef Production The magnitude and importance of the production of beef as a factor in American agriculture are not generally appreciated. The presentation of a book devoted solely to a discussion of the problems of the beef producer is an attempt to give adequate recognition to the industry. In "Beef Production" the attempt is made to present in the most direct manner certain facts of great economic importance to American beef producers. Much of the information given is based upon extensive feeding experiments conducted by the author at the Illinois Experiment Station. The arrangement of matter is designed to suit the demands both of the actual cattle feeder and of the student; to serve both as a ready reference guide - a text adapted to the progressive pedagogic presentation of the subject in the class-room and a treatise conveniently arranged in logical order for the general reader interested in the subject. The writer fully appreciates that the work is not as complete and comprehensive as it might be made; it is presented, however, with the thought that it will contribute to the literature, especially on the economic side, of beef production. It is hoped that it will serve to make beef production more profitable. A special need has been expressed for milk, eggs, and pork, but the country cannot afford to discontinue the production of beef merely because it can be demonstrated that dairy cattle, swine, and poultry produce more human food per unit of feed consumed than beef cattle do, or that an acre of cultivated soil planted to grains or soybeans pro duces more human food than can a similar area devoted to any kind of livestock production. The fallacy of such arguments is found in the millions of acres of American soil which, because of topography, climate, or location, cannot be utilized by other animals and which cannot be forced to produce food grains or soybeans. They do, how ever, provide feed for the growth of millions of pounds of meat which needs only a short finish on concentrates to become beef. Excerpt from The Livestock and Meat Industry of West Germany The Federal Republic of Germany comprises an area of square miles, about the size of the United Kingdom or the State of Oregon. It is bounded on the north by Denmark and the Baltic and North Seas, on the east by Czechoslovakia and East Germany, on the south by Austria and Switzerland, and on the west by France and the Low Countries. The northern third of Germany is part of the great European plain that stretches eastward through Russia. It is characterized by lakes and marshes and sandy and boulder - strewn areas. The highest elevations are around feet. For the next 100 miles to the south there are rolling hills with altitudes of to feet. Further south is an east-west plateau that merges with the foothills of the Alps and rises to feet at the swiss-austrian border. The country has a temperate climate and an annual average rainfall of about 30 inches, which is distributed throughout the year. Most parts of West Germany are topographically and climatically suitable for animal husbandry and livestock are found in practically all areas.
