Das Internet hat sich in den letzten Jahren radikal verändert. Daten sind durch Techniken der mobilen Kommunikation schneller verfügbar und von jedem Standort aus verfügbar geworden. Besonders die Reichweite des persönlichen Netzwerks hat sich durch soziale Media verändert. Facebook war eines der ersten Unternehmen, die das persönliche Netzwerk von Akteuren digital zugänglich machten. „Facebook ist das soziale Netzwerk des gleichnamigen Unternehmens, welches 2004 gegründet wurde. Gründer Mark Zuckerberg zählt mittlerweile zu den reichsten IT- und Internet-Unternehmern in den USA. Laut Internet Trends 2019 ist Facebook mit einem Börsenwert von 495 Milliarden US-Dollar zudem eines der wertvollsten Internetunternehmen weltweit (Stand: Juni 2019)“. Zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts kamen die sogenannten Social Media auf. Sie veränderten die Kommunikation grundlegend. Früher stand die Gemeinschaft im Vordergrund, heute sind es die Individuen, welche im Zentrum der gesellschaftlichen Kommunikation stehen. „Mit der Entwicklung zu globalisierten mobilen Gesellschaften lösen sich klare und auf Dauer ausgerichtete Strukturen, im Nationalsaat materialisiert, allmählich auf“. Als erstes soziales Netzwerk gilt die Plattform "SixDegrees", die im Jahre 1997 entstand. Dieser Meilenstein des Internets war zugleich ein Meilenstein für die soziale Interaktion der Zukunft und die Geburtsstunde der Idee von Facebook.
