"A hundred years ago in October 1917 members of the 4th Australian Light Horse Brigade participated in what is now regarded as the last great successful cavalry charge. Waving bayonets overhead in the dying light, they raced across six kilometres of exposed ground in Palestine, surprising the well-entrenched Turks. It was the decisive blow in the British capture of the strategic stronghold of Beersheba. The story of this remarkable military victory has largely slipped through the cracks of history, eclipsed in Australian sentiment by stories of dramatic defeat and loss at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. Paul Daley goes in search of the story of Beersheba. What he uncovers is a story of ordinary men capable of extraordinary acts, as he sheds new light on a dark episode starkly at odds with the Anzac mythology."

The ANZAC soldiers' successes remain largely overshadowed by the lives lost at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. The ANZAC breakthrough at Beersheba on October 31, 1917 was the pivotal event that turned the tide of the Middle Eastern Campaign that ultimately defeated the same Turkish armies that had annihilated them in Gallipoli. We remember our losses; now let's commemorate the centenary of the ANZAC victories of 1916-1918.

In October 2017, 175 members of the Australian Light Horse Association (ALHA), many of whom were direct descendants of WW1 troopers, followed in the steps of their forebears. The four countries visited included Egypt where in the shadow of the pyramids we saw where the ALH completed their final training. In Turkey we reflected on the ANZAC tragedy of the Nek and paid homage at Lone Pine at Gallipoli. Then finally, in Israel and Jordan, we rode and walked where the Light Horsemen covered themselves in glory, culminating in the great charges at Beersheba and later at Semakh. Their sacrifices, along with the hardships they faced, are incomparable. Nevertheless we faced our own challenges in completing our pilgrimage; Yet, just as it was a century earlier, the triumphs outweighed the trials.

The Battle of Beersheba, a redeeming win for the ANZACs who lost at Gallipoli, has slipped through the cracks of Australia's historical consciousness. Why are Australians so much more content to commemmorate a glorious defeat than we are to celebrate such a resounding, against the odds, victory?

In 1915–18, ANZAC and Ottoman soldiers clashed on numerous battlefields, from Gallipoli to Jerusalem. This illustrated study investigates the two sides' fighting men. The Gallipoli campaign of 1915–16 pitched the Australian and New Zealand volunteers known as the ANZACs into a series of desperate battles with the Ottoman soldiers defending their homeland. In August 1915, the bitter struggle for the high ground known as Chunuk Bair saw the peak change hands as the Allies sought to overcome the stalemate that set in following the landings in April. The ANZACs also played a key part in the battle of Lone Pine, intended to divert Ottoman attention away from the bid to seize Chunuk Bair. The Gallipoli campaign ended in Allied evacuation in the opening days of 1916. Thereafter, many ANZAC units remained in the Middle East and played a decisive role in the Allies' hard-fought advance through Palestine that finally forced the Turks to the peace table. The fateful battle of Beersheba in October 1917 pitted Australian mounted infantry against Ottoman foot soldiers as the Allies moved on Jerusalem. In this book, noted military historian Si Sheppard examines the fighting men on both sides who fought at Lone Pine, Chunuk Bair and Beersheba. The authoritative text is supported by specially commissioned artwork and mapping plus carefully chosen archive photographs.

The ANZAC victory at Beersheba on October 31, 1917, was not only the pivotal event that changed the tide of history for the Middle East but also the key that propelled biblical prophecy into a new era. God used the daring and adventurous spirit of the ANZACs to bring the ultimate breakthrough that turned the course of the Middle Eastern campaign and paved the way for the re-gathering of the Jews, the re-establishment of the nation of Israel and the preparation for Jesus' return as King. The ANZAC Call is going forth for the nation and the church to celebrate the centenary of this event, which also occurs on the 500th anniversary of Luther's challenge to the church that led to the Protestant Reformation. We have remembered our ANZAC losses; now let's celebrate our ANZAC victories! Will a new army of spiritual Anzac warriors arise to take up the challenge to complete spiritually what our ANZAC forefathers began physically and initiate a new reformation? Our nations' destiny is at stake.

Olive King was born in Sydney in 1885. She offered her services as an ambulance driver soon after war broke out in 1914. She joined a small private organization early in 1915 and went to Belgium. In May 1915 she joined the Scottish Women's Hospitals and her letters, until now unpublished, date from that time. She joined the Serbian Army in 1916 and subsequently rose to the rank of sergeant. Driving on hazardous roads to the Front and to the Adriatic coast, she was often in danger. She was awarded a Serbian silver medal for bravery, and later a gold medal. Her letters not only give a picture of daily life under wartime conditions and in the immediate post-war years. They also show how a woman of the time regarded herself and her place in society.

Transnational Tourism Experiences At Gallipoli written by Jim McKay and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-05-24 with Social Science categories.

This book offers a fresh account of the Anzac myth and the bittersweet emotional experience of Gallipoli tourists. Challenging the straightforward view of the Anzac obsession as a kind of nationalistic military Halloween, it shows how transnational developments in tourism and commemoration have created the conditions for a complex, dissonant emotional experience of sadness, humility, anger, pride and empathy among Anzac tourists. Drawing on the in-depth testimonies of travellers from Australia and New Zealand, McKay shines a new and more complex light on the history and cultural politics of the Anzac myth. As well as making a ground breaking, empirically-based intervention into the culture wars, this book offers new insights into the global memory boom and transnational developments in backpacker tourism, sports tourism and “dark” or “dissonant” tourism.
