Sagittae Angelorum, “arrows of angels,” offers a collection of literary works in poetry, short stories, and drama by four innovative authors—Jeremy Joosten, Joelle Joosten, Dominic Nootebos, and Lucas Smith. Jeremy Joosten engages his readers by creating narratives with animal and nature metaphors. The reader/listener cannot escape his call to existential reflection on life and relationships. He achieves personal self-examination in his one-act play, Kintsugi. Joelle Joosten explores spatial form and structure as part of metaphor in her poetry. In her short story Turbulence, she draws us into the powerful emotions of love and betrayal; and in her historical fiction on Ludwig van Beethoven, the intensity of music reinforces Beethoven’s interior tension. When it comes to love, Dominic Nootebos confronts his audience with the rawness of love and death in both his provocative poetry and his gothic love story, Lost Love of the Haunted and Hollow. Lucas Smith offers us poems where he explores space, syntax, and images leading his reader to a spiritual ascent. In the drama genre, he constructs his play based on the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati. He ends this collection bringing his readers to Mars, then back to Earth, in his sci-fi piece with a spiritual twist.

Christianity and Confucianism: Culture, Faith and Politics, sets comparative textual analysis against the backcloth of 2000 years of cultural, political, and religious interaction between China and the West. As the world responds to China's rise and China positions herself for global engagement, this major new study reawakens and revises an ancient conversation. As a generous introduction to biblical Christianity and the Confucian Classics, Christianity and Confucianism tells a remarkable story of mutual formation and cultural indebtedness. East and West are shown to have shaped the mind, heart, culture, philosophy and politics of the other - and far more, perhaps, than either knows or would want to admit. Christopher Hancock has provided a rich and stimulating resource for scholars and students, diplomats and social scientists, devotees of culture and those who pursue wisdom and peace today.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, opposition to the tsarist autocracy grew in Russia. To counter this, Tsar Nicholas I instigated the Official Nationality Decree of 1833 basing this on “Orthodoxy, Autocracy, Nationality”. Subsequent tsars who enforced repression, censorship and the suppression of the peripheral counties of the Empire upheld this policy. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov questioned whether this “Official Nationality” truly represented the views of the Russian people, and, through his operas, he demonstrated that the interpretation of these three premises was questionable. This book examines each of these facets of nationality and how Rimsky-Korsakov presents them in a new light in his operas. It also shows how the composer’s socio-political views, supported by his use of politically radical Russian writers, and as expressed through his correspondence and discussions with family and colleagues, clearly demonstrate that his political ideology, as well as his opposition to the tsar and his bureaucracy, gave a new interpretation of Russian “nationality”.

Beethoven S Ninth written by Esteban Buch and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with Music categories.

Who hasn't been stirred by the strains of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony? That's a good question, claims Esteban Buch. German nationalists and French republicans, communists and Catholics have all, in the course of history, embraced the piece. It was performed under the direction of Leonard Bernstein at a concert to mark the fall of the Berlin Wall, yet it also serves as a ghastly and ironic leitmotif in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. Hitler celebrated his birthdays with it, and the government of Rhodesia made it their anthem. And played in German concentration camps by the imprisoned, it also figured prominently at Mitterand's 1981 investiture. In his remarkable history of one of the most popular symphonic works of the modern period, Buch traces such complex and contradictory uses—and abuses—of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony since its premier in 1824. Buch shows that Beethoven consciously drew on the tradition of European political music, with its mix of sacred and profane, military and religious themes, when he composed his symphony. But while Beethoven obviously had his own political aspirations for the piece—he wanted it to make a statement about ideal power—he could not have had any idea of the antithetical political uses, nationalist and universalist, to which the Ninth Symphony has been put since its creation. Buch shows us how the symphony has been "deployed" throughout nearly two centuries, and in the course of this exploration offers what was described by one French reviewer as "a fundamental examination of the moral value of art." Sensitive and fascinating, this account of the tangled political existence of a symphony is a rare book that shows the life of an artwork through time, shifted and realigned with the currents of history.
