Six years ago my mother requested that I should write a story about how things were when we all were young. The experiences we had and endured along the way while making memories that would last a lifetime. The things that we often sat around talking about on so many occasions and would laugh so hard we would be in tears. My mother felt that other people would enjoy some of our fondest memories from my childhood as she did her best to raise her children as a single parent most of the time. My family felt it was a blessing to be able to look back and laugh about it all, what my mother referred to as the good old days. There are some stories you would not believe, but they a true some are funny and some are sad. My mother passed away on Thanksgiving day of 2006 so I am really trying to keep a promise that I made to her and keep our fondest and most cherished memories from my childhood and share it with the world. That is what my mother wanted me to do, I really hope you enjoy Before We Get Old (the good old days).

From the author of Abbey Road and Never a Dull Moment, the basis for AppleTV's 1971 documentary, come the stories of how rock icons like Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, and more have survived, thrived, and remained the most powerful forces in music. When Paul McCartney closed Live Aid in July of 1985, we thought he was rock’s Grand Old Man. He was forty-three years old. As the forty years since have shown, he—and many others of his generation—were just getting started. This was the time when live performance took over from records. The big names of the ’60s and ’70s exploited the Age of Spectacle that Live Aid had ushered in to enjoy the longest lap of honor in the history of humanity, continuing to go strong long after everyone else in the business had retired. This is a story without precedent, a story in which Elton John plays a royal funeral, Mick Jagger gets a knighthood, Bob Dylan picks up a Nobel Prize, The Beatles become, if anything, bigger than The Beatles, and it’s beginning to look as though all of the above will, thanks in a large part to technology, be playing in Las Vegas forever.

'A jolly quest to make the greying years more colourful' The Times When journalist Jane Gordon was hospitalised and left immobile after a nasty car accident, dependent on others to feed her and help her to the bathroom, she suddenly had to confront what it might be like to one day be old and infirm. Determined to not only regain her strength but find ways to stay physically and mentally fit for as long as possible, Jane decided to road-test different self-help programmes designed to promote longevity. From ballroom dancing to brain training, learning a second language to silent meditation, joining the gym and improving her gut health, Jane seeks advice from top neuroscientists and medical professionals to assess the impact these courses have on her health, and whether they will stop her getting old before her time. Part self-help, part manifesto, How Not To Get Old is about future-proofing your physical and mental wellbeing and taking control of the ageing process, rather than wallowing in it. For what begins as a clever experiment in the art of stopping time becomes a joyous celebration of what we CAN do, not what we can't or shouldn't, and ultimately demonstrates how later life is still very much for living...

In "B. M. BOWER: 26 Novels & 16 Tales of the Old West (Illustrated)," readers are invited into the richly textured world of the American West as articulated by one of its earliest female writers. Bower's works capture the spirit of adventure, romance, and the rugged individualism synonymous with frontier life. The illustrated collection effectively complements her vivid prose, evoking the landscapes and characters that defined this transformative era. Combining elements of realism with melodrama, Bower's narrative style reflects both the challenges and triumphs of her time and offers a nuanced perspective of Western mythology through well-crafted storytelling. B. M. Bower, born in 1871, was a trailblazer during a period when women's voices were often marginalized. Her upbringing in Montana's frontier exposed her to the dynamics of pioneer life, fostering her admiration for the grit and resilience of those who tamed the land. Bower's dedication to authenticity is evident; she often drew from her own experiences and the tales shared by those around her. Her significant contributions helped shape the genre of Western fiction, and her works remain a testament to the complexities of gender and representation in literature. This illustrated anthology is a treasure for both scholars and casual readers alike, offering not just a collection of engaging tales but also a vital glimpse into the historical context of the American West through the lens of a pioneering woman writer. Bower'Äôs novels and stories illuminate the cultural narratives that continue to inspire and inform contemporary interpretations of the Western genre.
