The small neck of the aneurysm afforded an easy surgical attack. An ordinary flat silver clip was placed over the sac and tightly compressed obliterated it completely. The clip was flush with the wall of the carotid artery. The sac, lateral to the silver clip, was then picked up with the forceps and thrombosed by the electocautery. Walter Dandy reporting his successful operation of a posterior communicating aneurysm on March 23, 1937. Walter Dandy's patient left the hospital in good health 2 weeks later, and from his report one may gain the impression that the operation was an easy task. Despite continuous developments during the following decades, it was not until the introduction of the operating microscope and microsurgical techniques that surgical treatment was generally accepted. During the microsurgical era surgical results have continued to improve due to diagnostical, neuroanaesthesi ological, and microsurgical refinements, and improved neurointensive care. Endovascular obliteration has become an important treatment alternative but this has not been included in this particular volume. The purpose of the present supplement of the ACTA NEUROCHIRURGICA is to review some of the elements in the neurosurgical management of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage that are important for a successful outcome. Professor Helge Nornes has been a major force in the development of new techniques and research strategies in this area for a number of years and has recently retired from the National Hospital in Oslo.

Chronic alcohol use is stated to be associated with cognitive and behavioural deficits. Alcohol-dependent individuals seem to have difficulties specifically in the cognitive abilities they need the most to recover from addiction and to cope with everyday demands; particularly executive functioning. This study demonstrates the challenge of assessing fundamental features of executive function in alcohol-dependent patients. The main strength of this study was the application of two different methods to explore their validity in the assessment of cognitive and behavioural aspects of executive function in terms of treatment outcome and long-term functional difficulties at a six-month follow up. Both the psychometrically assessed performance-based executive function deficits (EFDs) and the behavioural questionnaire, which refers to real-world behavioural manifestations of EFDs were of critical interest in terms of addictive behaviour and social and occupational functioning. The findings of this study proposed that the two methodological approaches could be capturing different aspects of executive function, and that self-reported behavioural manifestations of EFDs can help identify alcohol-dependent individuals at high risk for relapse.

Ich werde in der vorliegenden Studie ausf hrlich auf das Krankheitsbild der Demenz eingehen. Die individuelle Lebensqualit t (LQ) des Betroffenen als Zielvariable, bzw. Outcomekriterium, f r die Qualit t in der Betreuung von an Demenz erkrankten Menschen, steht dann im Mittelpunkt dieses Buches. In dem vorliegenden Buch besch ftige ich mich weiterhin mit den Verfahren zur Bewertung der LQ bei Menschen mit Demenz, die bereits entwickelt wurden und noch in der Entwicklung sind. Ziel des Buches wird es sein, die Problematik der Ergebnismessung im Demenzbereich aufzuzeigen. Ausgehend von der sehr geringen Anzahl deutschsprachiger Publikationen zum Thema, ist es ein zentrales Anliegen dieses Buches, bereits entwickelte Verfahren zur Bewertung der LQ von Menschen mit Demenz vorzustellen, zus tzlich werde ich auf das "Projekt Hilde" eingehen, welches sich noch in der Forschungsphase befindet. Folgende konkrete Fragestellungen stehen in diesem Buch im Vordergrund: Was sind Demenzen? Auf welchen Konzepten bzw.
