It is particularly gratifying to prepare a second edition of a book, because there is the necessary impli cation that the first edition was well received. Moreover, now an opportunity is provided to correct the problems or limitations that existed in the first edition as well as to address recent developments in the field. Thus, we are grateful to our friends, colleagues, and students, as well as to the reviewers who have expressed their approval of the first edition and who have given us valuable input on how the revision could best be structured. Perhaps the first thing that the reader will notice about the second edition is that it is more extensive than the first. The volume currently has 41 chapters, in contrast to the 31 chapters that comprised the earlier version. Chapters 3, 9, 29, and 30 of the first edition either have been dropped or were combined, whereas 14 new chapters have been added. In effect, we are gratified in being able to reflect the continued growth of behavior therapy in the 1980s. Behavior therapists have addressed an ever-increasing number of disorders and behavioral dysfunctions in an increasing range of populations. The most notable advances are taking place in such areas as cognitive approaches, geriatrics, and behavioral medicine, and also in the treatment of childhood disorders.

Behavior Modification: What It Is and How to Do It is a comprehensive, practical presentation of the principles of behavior modification and guidelines for their application. Appropriate for university students and for the general reader, it teaches forms of behavior modification ranging from helping children learn necessary life skills to training pets, to solving personal behavior problems. It teaches practical "how-to" skills, including: discerning long-term effects; designing, implementing, and evaluating behavioral programs; interpreting behavioral episodes; observing and recording behaviors; and recognizing instances of reinforcement, extinction, and punishment. Behavior Modification is ideal for courses in Behavior Modification, Applied Behavior Analysis, Behavior Therapy, the Psychology of Learning, and related areas; and for students and practitioners of various helping professions (such as clinical psychology, counselling, education, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, psychiatric nursing, psychiatry, social work, speech therapy, and sport psychology) who are concerned directly with enhancing various forms of behavior development. The material is presented in an interesting, readable format that assumes no prior knowledge of behavior modification or psychology. Specific cases and examples clarify issues and make the principles real. Guidelines throughout provide a ready source to use as a reference in applying the principles.Online resources, including an instructor’s manual, are available at www.routledge.com/9780815366546.

This succinct and easily understandable guide to "sheltered" training practices exhibits methods and techniques for use with a variety of problems in any rehabilitation workshop or activity center. A practical work, the book reports research and provides models which can be integrated easily into almost any program, regardless of clients, staff, behavioral problems, or training objectives. All the techniques and equipment described by Sanders can be put to use easily and inexpensively, and each training project can be applied immediately to a wide variety of sheltered workshop problems. A contribution to rehabilitation and rehabilitation psychology, an increasingly important segment of the helping professions, this practical guide thus offers a solid base for developing an approach which will help sheltered workshops to become more effective tools for rehabilitating the estimated more than five million handicapped persons in this country.

Despite medical technological advances, the major killers with which we must currently contend have remained essentially the same for the past few decades. Stroke, cancer, and heart disease together account for the vast majority of deaths in the United States. In addition, due to improved medical care, many Americans who would previously have died now survive these disorders, necessitating that they receive appropriate rehabilitation efforts. One result of our own medical advances is that we must now accept the high costs associated with providing quality care to individuals who develop one of these problems, and we must avail ourselves to assist of afflicted individuals. families Despite the relative stability of causes of death and disability, the health-care field is currently experiencing tremendous pressures, both from professionals with in the field, who desire more and better technology than is currently available, and from the public and other payers of health care (e.g., insurance companies), who seek an end to increasing health-care costs. These pressures, along with an increased emphasis on providing evidence of cost-effectiveness and quality assurance, are substantially changing the way that health-care professionals perform their jobs.

Abstract: The application of behavioral concepts to health problems ("behavioral medicine") represents a frontier for behavioral science research for the next decade. Current issues in the field of behavior modification emphasize the relevance of behavioral therapy to lifestyle changes, particularly in the area of health. Behavioral approaches to the etiology, pathogenesis, treatment, and prevention of illness are discussed. Specific topics include cognitive factors in behavior change; coping theory; the psychobiology of smoking; health hazard appraisal; weight loss; child behavior problems; student health; alcohol abuse; mental health; coronary risk behaviors; physical activity; and relapse. Health lifestyle change programs which can be implemented in the community via the mass media are described. Evaluation strategies for health lifestyle programs are also examined, in light of their importance to long term therapeutic success. The theme of maintenance of behavior change is stressed throughout.
