It is the aim of this research work is to investigate and to assess quatitatively as well as quantitatively the bearing behaviour of pile groups subjected to cyclic lateral loading. In this context, the influences of different boundary conditions, in particular the soil properties and the pile group geometry are to be analysed experimentally and numerically. Based on a brief literature review in chapter 2, model tests (centrifuge and small-scale at 1g) and numerical investigations have been carried out to contribute to a better understanding of the cyclic behaviour of pile groups. Chapter 3 describes the test procedure and summarises the results of centrifuge tests, which have been carried out at the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems (COFS) in Perth, Australia. Further investigations have been carried out by means of smallscale model tests at 1g in the testing facilities at the University of Kassel, Germany, with the results as summarised in chapter 4. A comparison of individual results of both test series is provided in chapter 5. The numerical studies in chapter 6 have been carried out in order to analyse the general ability of numerical simulations to calculate the response of pile groups to cyclic lateral loading. Based on the previously derived results, chapter 7 provides equations that can be applied to estimate the cyclic accumulation of lateral displacements of pile groups as well as the cyclic changes of the load distribution within pile groups.

A procedure for the three-dimensional analysis of pile groups subject to horizontal and vertical forces and moments which accounts for batter piles, the flexural resistance of the piles, and the lateral resistance of the surrounding soil is discussed. Due to the extensive amount of computational effort required to analyze a pile group, the analysis was programmed for a digital computer. Since many of the factors involved in the design of pile foundations are not known with great accuracy, the use of the digital computer permits the esigner to examine the effect of variations in various design parameters. This paper presents results obtained from analyzing several pile group arrangements for various soil and loading conditions. The results obtained from the analysis include the axial loads, moments, stresses, and deflections for individual piles, as well as for the group. The numerical results obtained from analyzing various illustrative examples show the significant influence that the following factors have on the loads that are introduced in the various individual piles: (a) the arrangement of the individual piles within the group, (b) the end condition as reflected by the connection between the pile cap and the piles, (c) the lateral resistance of the surrounding soil, and (d) the flexural resistance of the pile. Comparison with field and laboratory tests indicates that the behavior of pile groups predicted by the analysis is in qualitative agreement with observed behavior. This paper demonstrates that it is possible to use the pile group analysis presented as a practical method for solving design problems. The ability to evaluate variations in design parameters should lead to safer and more economical designs.

A large-scale group of nine steel pipe piles in a closely spaced arrangement was subjected to cyclic lateral loading with water above the ground surface. The piles were 10.75 in. in diameter and 40 ft long and were installed at a center-to-center spacing of 3-pile diameters. The soils at the Houston, Texas site consisted of a stiff, overconsolidated clay. In an attempt to model storm loading of offshore structures, the loading was electronically controlled to follow a sinusoidal curve of deflection versus time with a 30-sec period. All of the piles in the group were extensively instrumented to obtain measurements of shear in the individual piles and bending moment as a function of depth. Results were compared with the results of a similar load test on a single pile that was about 30 ft away. Keywords: Cohesive soils, Cyclic lateral loading, Pile groups.

Bending moment distributions developed in laterally loaded passive pile and passive pile groups in cohesionless soil were investigated in laboratory conditions through model pile experiments. Different from the active pile loading, the lateral load was given directly to the piles using a movable large direct shear box. In experiments strain gauges fastened to the piles at five levels and a computer based data reading system were used. The behavior of a single pile and a pile group having five piles were investigated through strain measurements in order to observe bending moment distribution on the piles. The behavior of passive single pile was found to be similar to the results obtained in early studies. In pile group, above the shear plane maximum bending moments within the pile group were found to be developed on the piles nearest to the loading. On the shear plane maximum bending moments were developed on the piles farthest from the loading just like active piles. Below the shear plane, maximum bending moments were developed mainly on the piles nearest to the loading.
