Behind the Wireless tells the story of women at the BBC in the 1920s and 30s. Broadcasting was brand new in Britain and the BBC developed without many of the overt discriminatory practices commonplace at the time. Women were employed at all levels, except the very top, for instance as secretaries, documentary makers, advertising representatives, and librarians. Three women held Director level posts, Hilda Matheson (Director of Talks), Mary Somerville (Director of School Broadcasting), and Isa Benzie (Foreign Director). Women also produced the programmes aimed at female listeners and brought women broadcasters to the microphone. There was an ethos of equality and the chance to rise through the ranks from accounts clerk to accompanist. But lurking behind the façade of modernity were hidden inequalities in recruitment, pay, and promotion and in 1932 a marriage bar was introduced. Kate Murphy examines how and why the interwar BBC created new opportunities for women.

The concept of wireless technology is not novel either. Many engineers, however, lack experience with the development of wireless technologies or the incorporation of wireless devices into the operation of industrial facilities. The theory and practise of wireless communications in an industrial setting lack in depth technical knowledge. Not everyone is convinced that wireless solutions can provide the promised reliability in the typically unfavourable conditions seen in most manufacturing settings. This textbook provides a holistic overview of wireless communication principles and explains the tangled web of ideas behind these innovations in a way that is accessible to students with a foundational understanding of probability and digital communication. The purpose of this book is to provide a cohesive presentation of current ideas in wireless communication and to contextualize those ideas within the larger framework of the wireless systems to which they have been applied. This work was designed for use in a first-year graduate level wireless communication course. Proficiency in signal and system theory, probability, and digital communication from an undergraduate or starting graduate level course is assumed.

This exciting new book, which builds on the author’s previous book, Spectrum Wars: The Policy and Technology Debate, discusses the evolution of spectrum use and management caused by the rise of 5G and beyond in all wireless technologies, from terrestrial wireless, including mobile and fixed, to non-terrestrial including satellite and drone technologies. A survey of these new technologies and use cases are included, allowing the reader to understand the technical, operational, and commercial context of these systems. This book addresses how the traditional methods used in evaluating spectrum management have changed, including the use and need of low, medium, and high band spectrum to meet user demands and the use of tools such as spectrum sharing to make available much needed spectrum for 5G and beyond. The book also examines how governments are making additional spectrum available for all uses, including recent spectrum auctions, clearing, and shared networks. Public policy challenges, such as the digital divide and the impact of the pandemic, are explored in relation to their impact on spectrum management. Finally, the evolution to 6G that is already occurring, and the impact that 6G will likely have on spectrum management in the future, is reviewed. Written by an expert in the field, this book provides a thoughtful approach to the overall spectrum management regime from allocating spectrum to having it released into the market for 5G and beyond.
