Fimbriae are the best-studied bacterial colonization factors. They are of paramount importance in bacterial pathogenesis and microbial ecology. Due to the advent of new and powerful techniques, an impressive amount of information has been accumulated on these important surface organelles over the last decade. The first book of its kind, Fimbriae brings together into one volume the state of the art of this very active field. Internationally recognized researchers give both a horizontal and lateral approach to fimbriology. Selected types of fimbriae are extensively reviewed and fundamental questions such as evolution, control or regulation, biogenesis, bacteria-host interaction, and fimbriae-based vaccines are examined.

In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell; shortly afterwards the two Germanies reunited, and East Germany ceased to exist. In Stasiland, winner of the 2004 Samuel Johnson Prize, Anna Funder tells extraordinary tales from the underbelly of the former East Germany, a country where the headquarters of the secret police can become a museum literally overnight, and one in fifty East Germans were informing on their countrymen and women. She meets Miriam, who as a sixteen-year-old might have started the Third World War, visits the man who painted the line which became the Berlin Wall and gets drunk with the legendary 'Mik Jegger' of the East, who the authorities once declared - to his face - to 'no longer exist'.

- Showcases the work of internationally acclaimed German artist A.R. Penck (1939-2017). 2019 marks 80 years since his birth; it is also the 30-year-anniversary of the end of the Cold War- The project honors an important artist who emigrated from East to West Germany and whose work addresses issues facing modern man in society- Published to accompany a show at the Ashmolean, Oxford, from 27 June to 3 November, 2019The artistic language of A.R. Penck (1936-2017) - characterised by brusquely and expressively painted signs and 'primitive' symbols - is instantly recognisable. Abiding interests in systems theory and cybernetics, as well as pre-historic cultures and science fiction, guided his art toward an investigation of the relationships between man and society's power systems. His prolific artistic output was primarily driven by his desire to create a universal artistic language that addresses the issues facing modern man. This publication accompanies A.R. Penck's first solo exhibition in Oxford. It features works created between 1970 and 1990 and introduces his art to an audience that might be unfamiliar with it by focussing on the artist's signature motif of the Standart stick figure in its diverse forms. The artist was born as Ralf Winkler in Dresden, East Germany. Rejected by the establishment for the decidedly un-academic style of his works and their political overtones, he persisted as an 'underground' autodidact in what was then the GDR. He adopted the pseudonym A.R. Penck to counter difficulties with East German authorities who banned his works from public exhibition. With the aid of friends, his works were smuggled to West Germany, where they were exhibited for the first time in 1968 in Cologne. In 1980, Penck emigrated to the West, first living outside Cologne, then in London and Ireland, often dividing his time between different locations.

For nearly two decades Parkett has been the leading international journal on contemporary art. Its in-depth presentations on artists have become the standard for criticism and analysis, and being selected to be in Parkett is considered an honor for contemporary artists worldwide. More than 100 artists have collaborated with Parkett on both the journal's content and the production of special art editions made available to the readers of Parkett. In this new catalogue raisonne, each of the 120 artists' editions are fully documented and reproduced in full color. Along with the editions, this volume also pays tribute to the many authors who have written texts for Parkett by providing a complete index of their contributions, and it reproduces each Parkett cover, now more than 60, in full color. Deborah Wye, a curator at the Museum of Modern Art, writes an essay looking at the various methods of collaboration between Parkett and the artists, including the editions, inserts, spines, covers, and design of the publication. Susan Tallman explores the diversity and richness of the artists' editions through the years. This book coincides with the exhibition Collaborations with Parkettt: 1984 to Now, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in the spring of 2001.
