This book was written as a means to teach how important it is to understand the way other cultures live; without a true understanding of the diversity that is between cultures, it can result in conflict and misunderstandings. This book is meant to be an aid to the reader about how to show compassion and truly care about one another; not caring about any differences in skin tone, hair, or dialect, it is about what is on the inside that makes the person whom we really are. When we think of others and behave toward them in the same manner we want them to act towards us, this is when we truly do our part in making the world a better place to live. The coming pages of this book are going to show you, the reader, just what it takes to learn how to study and live in a foreign country. How to get along in a culture that doesn't really understand about the ethnicity you come from; and how you can do your part to learn about the culture and ethnic beliefs of the country you are about to embark upon. The first step is to learn about "culture adaptation." What some like to refer to as "culture shock" isn't really shocking at all--it is just an uneasiness felt when coming face-to-face with an ethnic group that we don't completely understand. This uneasiness goes away as we familiarize ourselves with the people and learn about their culture. When we choose to study abroad in a land that is far from home, we must make every effort to remember we are visitors in their home, and we must respect and learn how to abide by their customs and value system. Remember that the baggage we carry to a foreign country isn't just the luggage that holds our clothing and personal belongings that we brought with us from home; we also carry an invisible baggage which is our "cultural baggage." This cultural baggage is the values and behavior you bring with you that is common to people of your culture. If you are in touch with your own cultural beliefs, you will be able to see how different they are to the culture of the people you are visiting, and this will help you in understanding how to get along with and adapt to the differences. When in a different land from our home, we need to realize that the things we think are "normal" may not be perceived as such to the people we are visiting. Try to read as much information as you can find available on the country and its people before you step foot on the soil of a foreign land. By doing so, you will familiarize yourself with the customs and beliefs of the people you will be living with.

Yellow Racism As Large As White Racism written by Arielle Gabriel and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-01-26 with categories.

Yellow Racism is a pioneering book that focuses on Asian Racism, Hong Kong, China, Singapore & Malaysia, Japan & Korea. It's a gutsy, original work, a must for all readers on racism. Though not denying the historical sweep of White Racism, it surprises us with information on countries such as Japan and China that developed full and lucrative slavery trading systems, long before Columbus set foot in American in 1492.Though this racism cruelly targets Blacks, African or African American blacks, due to the centuries old worship of paler skin, it also can show bias towards Whites, and even other Asians: Mainland Chinese vs. Hong Kong Chinese, Asian women who state boldly they prefer Whites to their own men, and sadly, Yellow Moms and Whites Dads who favour White, yet have half-Asian kids, called Hapas. These racist individuals are but a small minority of people in Asia, and I expect this book to be misquoted, as even critics of racism now risk being called racist, with a volatile social climate. In Hong Kong, we learn of Harmony, a young black woman subjected to the Nose Pinching Gesture, where a Chinese closes their nostrils when seated beside a Black or even a White. I myself have witnessed this 4 or 5 times. We also learn of the needless hospital death of a young Indian woman, Harinder Veriah, for no other reason than she had Dark Skin.In Malaysia, true crime websites link rampant crime waves to African students, with no statistics to back them up. Lewd comments about the sexuality of blacks stealing their women show the true fear. In Singapore and Malaysia both Indians and even PRC Chinese face housing bias. They just are not wanted, for the crime of being born another type of human being.Pure Blood theories of Japan and Korea feature, with similar fears of Foreign Men dating their women, and even signs posted openly on bars and stores and restaurants: No Foreigners Admitted.A refreshing chapter on Christian Guilt attempts to explain why Western democracies flagellate themselves for small amounts of racism, while a Niagara Falls of racism in Asia scarcely gathers notice, and is even apologized for by some Whites: phrases such as unintentional racism, innocent racism, and system racism - they let the individual off the hook for any responsibility. The chapter on half-Asian children is poignant. The adult children of Asian moms and White dads begin boldly to speak out all over the Internet as to having moms who clearly adored and preferred White Men to their own Asian Men. It's Yellow Racism mating up with White Racism, posing as the Globalist Couple. The author takes new leaps in thought, and suggests the Chinese Eunuch Myth, that Asian men are secondary, is the other side of the same racist coin of the Sexy Black Stud, that blacks are to be valued for their physicality. Sexiness in the world of Classic Racism as a primary trait is not helpful. A fully rounded human has a mind, a character, and a spiritual dimension: a soul, a spirit.(Jews in Nazi Germany seen as sexual predators, while in Canada, both the First Nations women and the French women of Quebec were viewed as sexier.)In Mainland China, a pretty young half-black television singer was savagely attacked for having a black American father. As with the Malay crime sites, the fear of the black man's sexuality fueled the flames. An illogical fear, as all humans are different. Asian women found in crime rings with African men are there as much for the money, not sexual romance.Yellow Racism has been forgiven by Whites because "It is not as violent as the American kind." Yet to deprive people of housing and jobs due to skin shade or tone - is this not a type of violence?Arielle Gabriel also writes of Christian Guilt, as a partial explanation as to why Western democracies are so self-critical, writing of her Sunday School lessons in Canada. She intends her book to open a discussion, hoping for a lively and friendly debate, on Yellow Racism.

Blasian Invasion written by Myra S. Washington and has been published by Univ. Press of Mississippi this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-26 with Social Science categories.

Myra S. Washington probes the social construction of race through the mixed-race identity of Blasians, people of Black and Asian ancestry. She looks at the construction of the identifier Blasian and how this term went from being undefined to forming a significant role in popular media. Today Blasian has emerged as not just an identity Black/Asian mixed-race people can claim, but also a popular brand within the industry and a signifier in the culture at large. Washington tracks the transformation of Blasian from being an unmentioned category to a recognized status applied to other Blasian figures in media. Blasians have been neglected as a meaningful category of people in research, despite an extensive history of Black and Asian interactions within the United States and abroad. Washington explains that even though Americans have mixed in every way possible, racial mixing is framed in certain ways, which almost always seem to involve Whiteness. Unsurprisingly, media discourses about Blasians mostly conform to usual scripts already created, reproduced, and familiar to audiences about monoracial Blacks and Asians. In the first book on this subject, Washington regards Blasians as belonging to more than one community, given their multiple histories and experiences. Moving beyond dominant rhetoric, she does not harp on defining or categorizing mixed race, but instead recognizes the multiplicities of Blasians and the process by which they obtain meaning. Washington uses celebrities, including Kimora Lee, Dwayne Johnson, Hines Ward, and Tiger Woods, to highlight how they challenge and destabilize current racial debate, create spaces for themselves, and change the narratives that frame multiracial people. Finally, Washington asserts Blasians as evidence not only for the fluidity of identities, but also for the limitations of reductive racial binaries.

The African American Encounter With Japan And China written by Marc Gallicchio and has been published by Univ of North Carolina Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-06-19 with Social Science categories.

In the first book to focus on African American attitudes toward Japan and China, Marc Gallicchio examines the rise and fall of black internationalism in the first half of the twentieth century. This daring new approach to world politics failed in its effort to seek solidarity with the two Asian countries, but it succeeded in rallying black Americans in the struggle for civil rights. Black internationalism emphasized the role of race or color in world politics and linked the domestic struggle of African Americans with the freedom struggle of emerging nations "of color," such as India and much of Africa. In the early twentieth century, black internationalists, including W. E. B. Du Bois and Marcus Garvey, embraced Japan as a potential champion of the darker races, despite Japan's imperialism in China. After Pearl Harbor, black internationalists reversed their position and identified Nationalist China as an ally in the war against racism. In the end, black internationalism was unsuccessful as an interpretation of international affairs. The failed quest for alliances with Japan and China, Gallicchio argues, foreshadowed the difficulty black Americans would encounter in seeking redress for American racism in the international arena.

Afro Asia written by Fred Ho and has been published by Duke University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-04 with Social Science categories.

With contributions from activists, artists, and scholars, Afro Asia is a groundbreaking collection of writing on the historical alliances, cultural connections, and shared political strategies linking African Americans and Asian Americans. Bringing together autobiography, poetry, scholarly criticism, and other genres, this volume represents an activist vanguard in the cultural struggle against oppression. Afro Asia opens with analyses of historical connections between people of African and of Asian descent. An account of nineteenth-century Chinese laborers who fought against slavery and colonialism in Cuba appears alongside an exploration of African Americans’ reactions to and experiences of the Korean “conflict.” Contributors examine the fertile period of Afro-Asian exchange that began around the time of the 1955 Bandung Conference, the first meeting of leaders from Asian and African nations in the postcolonial era. One assesses the relationship of two important 1960s Asian American activists to Malcolm X and the Black Panthers. Mao Ze Dong’s 1963 and 1968 statements in support of black liberation are juxtaposed with an overview of the influence of Maoism on African American leftists. Turning to the arts, Ishmael Reed provides a brief account of how he met and helped several Asian American writers. A Vietnamese American spoken-word artist describes the impact of black hip-hop culture on working-class urban Asian American youth. Fred Ho interviews Bill Cole, an African American jazz musician who plays Asian double-reed instruments. This pioneering collection closes with an array of creative writing, including poetry, memoir, and a dialogue about identity and friendship that two writers, one Japanese American and the other African American, have performed around the United States. What images come to mind when the words "Asians," "Asian Americans" and "African Americans" are mentioned? Do the images revolve around negative racial stereotypes of the various groups, beginning with a portrait of African Americans, as "noncitizens," and as "discredited outlaws," as noted by Nobel Prize Laureate Toni Morrison in her categorization of "race talk"? Conversely, when images of Asians are conjured, is what comes to mind a picture of pig-tailed Chinese immigrants, along with recent Asian newcomers, eager to maintain social distance from discredited black outlaws? Do the images, which the groups often carry of one another, extend to their histories of shared diminished racial status and stereotyping, recalling a period in history when a significant segment of African American men were mocked as "George," "Sam" and "Rastus," and Chinese immigrants were ridiculed as "John." How have these images shaped relations between the groups? Are there elements of commonality between Blacks and Asians in America? What historical forces have shaped their interactions? This volume, edited by Hazel M. McFerson, brings together a diverse group of scholars to address these questions. Their chapters are as diverse as their backgrounds, yet they all contribute without pessimism or naivete to a view of the varied interactions, which symbolized the crossings, commonality and conflict between Asians and African Americans during different periods, and to their prospects for future interactions. This book is divided into three parts. Part I examines relations dating from the mid-18th century to the late 1940s. Part II of the book examines contemporary issues and explores changes in Asian and Asian American communities and outlooks often characterized by "race talk and social distance" from African Americans. Part III of the book focuses on the international dimension of Asian/African American interactions and crossings. The book concludes with an assessment of the implications for contemporary economic interests and solidarity in Africa and Asia today.
