Excerpt from Beitrage zur Geschichte Agyptens Unter dem Islam Es ist wohl kein Zufall, dass wir ausser Lane Poole's guter, aber leider zu kurzer History of Egypt in the Middle Ages noch keine ausfuhrliche auf den Quellen fussende Gesamtdarstellung des mittelalterlichen Agyptens besitzen. Der Grund liegt darin, dass jeder weiss, wie viel - trotz glanzender Vorarbeiten - namentlich fur die kulturelle Seite der Aufgabe noch zu geschehen hat, bevor man an eine grosse Geschichte des islamischen Agyptens denken darf. Mein Zweck bei den vorliegenden "Beitragen zur Geschichte Agyptens" ist nun der, eine Reihe kleinerer Aufsatze zu diesem Thema zu liefern, schwer zugangliches aber wertvolles Material mitzuteilen und zu verarbeiten; dabei ist meine Hauptaufgabe die kulturgeschichtliche Betrachtung, doch schliesse ich nichts fur die Geschichte wichtiges, auch die Quellenfrage nicht aus. Das erste Heft bietet zunachst eine Reihe von Bemerkungen uber die Geschichtsschreiber unter den Fatimiden und widmet dann den im Escorial erhaltenen Fragmenten des grossten fatimidischen Historikers, el-Musabbihi, besondere Aufmerksamkeit. Ich gedachte anfangs, den ganzen Text (die Jahre 414/5 bruchstucksweise umfassend) zu edieren, hielt es jedoch bei dem schlechten Zustande der Handschrift und ihrer fragmentarischen Erhaltung fur unmoglich, einen einigermassen korrekten Text herzustellen; auch schien mir das Ganze den Druck nicht zu verdienen. The Studies in the History and Culture of the Islamic Orient (STIO) is the series of "Supplements" to the journal Der Islam. Both are published by the Section for the History and Culture of the Near East in the Asian-African Institute of the University of Hamburg. The Section was established in 1908, before the foundation of the University of Hamburg. Under its first Director, C.H. Becker, it was the first academic centre in Germany in which teaching and research concentrated on the historical and cultural aspects of the Islamic world, and not just on philological issues. Many of Germany's leading authorities in Islamic Studies have studied and/or taught here. The "Supplements" have maintained the same high quality and met the same high demands as the journal Der Islam and have published numerous studies on the history and culture of the Islamic world which have represented milestones in their relevant fields.
