Beloved Syria ¿ Considering Syrian Perspectives (Second Edition) presents both the voices of Syrians as well as those of Australians who have had respectful contact with Syria. There is particular focus on art, music, cinema, sport, cuisine, travel and renewal. Beloved Syria avoids contentious political issues; instead, it aims to reveal aspects of Syria that help explain the deep attachment Syrians have for `country¿ and for a Syrian identity. The love Syrians express for country might astonish many Australians who know Syria mostly through television images that present war and destruction. Beloved Syria aims to explore this love, which is clearly not an expression of an aggressive patriotism. Syria is located within a cradle of civilization. Syrians¿ attachment to country may party be explained by Syria's history and the physical reminders of it. Damascus and Aleppo, the two oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, are in Syria. Loving faiths could also help explain the inclusive nature of the attachment Syrians have toward their country. Since their country links continents, `Syrians¿ have borne occupations and wars for millennia, so there could be stories of heroism, treachery and grief embedded in their DNA. Many of us would have distant ancestors that passed through the land we now call Syria. Beloved Syria provides an opportunity for readers to connect to this land, its history and its resilient people. The magazine aims to simulate conversations. For example, what can lead people from diverse faith and ethnic backgrounds to feel a sense of unity, one that is charitable? What positive lessons can multi-cultural Australians glean from their story? The Beloved Syria team includes Syrians in Australia on humanitarian visas, an Iranian graphic designer on a humanitarian visa, a Korean web administrator, and non-Syrian Australians. What originally connected us was AMES Australia, a meeting place for many cultures as it provides English classes and settlement support programs to refugees and asylum seekers. The Second Edition of Beloved Syria is free. A successful crowd funding campaign has made its publication possible. Most of those working on the magazine are volunteers. We welcome both donations and sponsor requests.
