Excerpt from Bergson and the Modern Spirit an Essay in Constructive Thought After a long period of neglect and even disrepute, philosophy is beginning to regain the attention of the average man. It is time. We have unduly simplified our lives, so that they tend to consist almost exclusively of business and amusement. Multitudes have been trying the experiment of living without science and art and philosophy and even religion. The experiment was bound to fail, for it meant the pauperization of life. When great interests that should form part of the content of life arc ignored, the inevitable result is a sense of dissatisfaction, of futility, and doubt as to whether it is all worth while. Our greatest need is a clear vision of the only life that can satisfy, a life that is informed and disciplined by science and adorned and ennobled by art, that is widened, steadied and strengthened by philosophy, and that comes to flower in the religious spirit of faith, hope, gladness, reverence and love. The New Bergson written by John Mullarkey and has been published by Manchester University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Literary Criticism categories.

At the threshold of the twentieth century, Bergson reset the agenda for philosophy and its relationship with science, art and even life itself. Concerned with both examining and extolling the phenomena of time, change, and difference, he was at one point held as both "the greatest thinker in the world" and "the most dangerous man in the world." Yet the impact of his ideas was so all-pervasive among artists, philosophers and politicians alike, that by the end of the First World War it had become impossibly diffuse. In a manner imitating his own cult of change, the Bergsonian school departed from the scene almost as quickly as it had arrived. As part of a current resurgence of interest in Bergson, both in Europe and in North America, this collection of essays addresses the significance of his philosophical legacy for contemporary thought.

Underneath and beyond the method, you have caught the intention and the spirit...Your study could not be more conscientious or true to the original." - Henri Bergson The famous French philosopher Henri Bergson had but the highest praise for Edouard le Roy's presentation of Bergson's philosophy for the general public in a couple of articles that would form the core of this book, A New Philosophy: Henri Bergson: Henri Bergson. Le Roy hoped that this volume would serve as an introduction, which would make it easier to read and understand Bergson's works, and serve as a primer to his "new philosophy." Bergson's new philosophy essentially argued that the intuition is deeper than the intellect. His work was considered the main challenge to the mechanistic view of nature. A great opponent of Cartesian dualism, he resisted the reduction of psychological phenomena to physical states. Bergson, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1927, is sometimes said to have anticipated features of relativity theory and the modern scientific theories of the mind. EDOUARD LE ROY (1870-1954) was the French philosopher Henri Bergson's most famous pupil. From 1914 until 1921 he functioned as Bergson's "permanent substitute" in the Chair of Modern Philosophy at the College de France while the philosopher served on French diplomatic missions.

Making Spirit Matter written by Larry Sommer McGrath and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020 with France categories.

"The problem of the relation between mind and brain has been among the most persistent in modern Western thought, one that even recent advances in neuroscience haven't been able to put to rest. Historian Larry McGrath's Making Spirit Matter is about how a particularly productive and influential generation of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century French thinkers attempted to answer this puzzle by showing the mutual dependence of spirit and matter. The veritable revolution taking place across disciplines, from philosophy to psychology, located our spiritual powers in the brain and offered a radical reformulation of the meaning of science, spirit, and the self. Pulling out connections between thinkers such as Bergson, Blondel, and FouilleáI p1 se, among others, McGrath plots the intellectual movements that brought back to life themes of agency, time, and experience by putting into action the very sciences that seemed to undermine metaphysics and theology. In so doing, Making Spirit Matter lays bare the long legacy of this moment in the history of ideas and how it might renew our understanding of the relationship between mind and brain"--
