Questo libro non parla di Silvio Berlusconi. Non si chiede quali obiettivi egli abbia perseguito, non intende giudicarne il comportamento o stabilire se abbia governato bene o male. Scegliendo punti di osservazione e ipotesi interpretative finora trascurate, Giovanni Orsina affronta invece il berlusconismo: la sostanza del discorso pubblico del Cavaliere, come esso è stato accolto dal paese, perché ha avuto successo, perché non ha funzionato. Partendo dall’assunto che si sia trattato di un progetto ideologico e politico sufficientemente coerente, il libro ne analizza il nucleo fondante e l’elettorato di riferimento, in una prospettiva storica di lungo periodo e all’interno di un più generale contesto internazionale, ossia come «manifestazione particolarmente clamorosa, sia per intensità sia per durata, di tendenze che negli ultimi anni hanno caratterizzato pressoché tutte le democrazie». Se molti sono già stati i tentativi di avviare un discorso su basi storiche per renderne conto, «bisogna scavare di più – sostiene Orsina – per comprendere da quali fragilità della nostra storia sia scaturito il berlusconismo, in quale modo esso abbia inteso rimediare a quelle fragilità, perché la sua proposta in quello specifico momento storico sia parsa ragionevole, e come mai infine la democrazia italiana si sia spinta così tanto più avanti delle altre lungo la via del “postnovecento”». In particolare emerge la consapevolezza che la comprensione del berlusconismo possa avvenire soltanto se si compie lo sforzo di osservare il mondo dal punto di vista di chi ha votato Silvio Berlusconi. Solo sostituendo le spiegazioni fondate sulla scarsa intelligenza, scarsa moralità e scarsa razionalità degli elettori del Cavaliere con un’analisi della loro diversa intelligenza, diversa moralità e diversa razionalità - diverse, appunto, ma non necessariamente inferiori - diviene realmente possibile capire quel che è successo in Italia negli ultimi vent’anni. E, magari, provare a superarlo.

The analysis crosses chronological and generic boundaries, stretching back to the comedy Italian style, which foreshadows the symbolic meanings incarnated by Berlusconi before he actually entered the public stage. The book delineates a comprehensive cinematic corpus and focuses on a selection of narrative and documentary films, from the proto-Berlusconi everyman of La più bella serata della mia vita (The Most Wonderful Evening of My Life, 1972) by Ettore Scola, to the Berlusconi pretext for political self-reflection of Arance e martello (Oranges and Hammer, 2014) by Diego Bianchi. The author argues that the Berlusconi in these films represents not only the historical persona, but also a pervasive semiotic category in which the recent history of the country is inscribed and Italian society mirrors itself.
