This book traces the effects of materiality - including money and its opposite, poverty - on the psychical lives of George Bernard Shaw and his characters. While this study focuses on the protagonists of the five novels Shaw wrote in the late 1870s and early 1880s, it also explores how materialism, feeling, and emotion are linked throughout his entire canon. At the same time, it demonstrates how Shaw’s conceptions of human subjectivity parallel those of two of his contemporaries, Sigmund Freud and Georg Simmel. In particular, this book explores how theories of so-called 'marginal economics' influence fin de siècle thought about human psychology and the sociology of the modern metropolis, particularly London.

This book troubles the ways young people have been constructed as ‘trouble’ through critical readings of the effects and impacts, politically and ideologically, globally and locally, of scholarship and practice directed at South African young people’s sexualities over the last three decades of addressing HIV, GBV and other sexual and gender justice challenges. Located primarily in South Africa, the book speaks to global concerns about the politics of knowledge and transnational flows of information and practice with respect to gender and sexuality and is framed by global imperatives and analyses located in transnational, postcolonial and intersectional feminist frameworks. The key argument developed here, and explored in relation to several different forms of research and practice, is that efforts to challenge HIV, GBV and unequal sexual and gender practices among young people, particularly as evident in heterosexual relationships, have tended to reflect and reproduce (re)new(ed) orthodoxies about sexuality, gender, family and young people, while bolstering global and local racist, classist ‘othering’ of certain communities and nation-states, and reiterating the ‘innocence’ and authority of those already privileged and centred. The book contributes to critical reflexive work on global practices of knowledge and its complex enmeshment with power in the terrain of sexual and gender justice work aimed at young people.

In the five novels he wrote before he became the great Irish playwright everyone knows, George Bernard Shaw worked out the basic design of his public future, fulfilling his own dictum that "no man is real until he has been transmuted into a work of art." R. F. Dietrich stresses Shaw's psychic transformation from a shy, priggish, inept Shelleyan intellectual to an efficient, extroverted, ironically devilish statesman-poet. Amid the decay and death of the old Victorian father figures, the young genius discovers, as James Joyce did later, that he must commit autogenesis and re-create himself as his own authority figure. In the moral and spiritual emptiness of the modern world, Shaw engendered the inherently moral "Superman," who would triumph over circumstances by being a master rather than a slave of reality.
