From heartwarming and humorous stories about community, pets, and family to insightful essays from influential writers and stirring accounts of everyday heroes, The Best of Reader’s Digest will inspire you, amuse you, and always remind you of the good in humanity. This impressive collection contains the very best of 100 years of Reader’s Digest stories. The book is brimming with inspiring tales about family and society, funny takes on human nature, and poignant personal accounts of important cultural events and historical eras. With essays from influential writers and entertainers nestled alongside remarkable tales about everyday heroes, this volume is sure to have something for everyone. You’ll laugh, learn, reflect, and be inspired by the diverse stories, including: *Queens of the Road: An adult daughter reflects upon the humorous, occasionally exasperating exchanges she has with her mother while they “enjoy” long road trips together; she offers tongue-in-cheek and witty advice to those looking to do the same. *I Get a Lot More Than I Give: Entertainer and USO legend Bob Hope gives a touching firsthand account of performing for GIs at Christmastime in Vietnam, describes the valuable life lessons he’s learned in the process, and shares emotional memories of encounters with wounded soldiers. *Fire Lover: Writer Joseph Wambaugh delivers a page-turning account of the investigation into a series of California arsons that occurred in the 1980s. Now-infamous arson investigator John Orr intimately participates in the case, but he’s ultimately revealed to be the arsonist in question. *Why We Forgive: In an intimate essay, revered activist and theologian Desmond Tutu meditates on the value of forgiveness. Recalling the physical and verbal abuse his father inflicted upon his family, Tutu acknowledges that forgiveness can be difficult but reminds readers that “the only way to experience healing and peace is to forgive.” *A Fight for Life at 35,000 Feet: When 35-year-old Theresa de Bara goes into premature labor in the middle of a flight, the crew and passengers have no choice but to jump to action. This dramatic and suspenseful account describes the efforts of two paramedics and a doctor on board to ensure the safety and health of Theresa and her baby. In addition, the book features hilarious jokes and cartoons, classic illustrations and photographs, and true stories from readers like you.

Kidnapped Catriona written by Robert Louis Stevenson and has been published by Birlinn this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-06-24 with Fiction categories.

In "Kidnapped" (1886) and later fiction such as "The Master of Ballantrae" (1888), Stevenson examined some of the extreme and contrary currents of Scotland's past, often projecting a dualism of both personality and belief. This dualism is most famous in "Kidnapped", whose two central characters are David Balfour, a Lowland Whig, and Alan Breck Stewart, a Highland Jacobite. The novel revolves around their friendship and their differences, suggesting a metaphor for Scotland itself. Stevenson wrote the sequel "Catriona" with the title David Balfour, but during serialisation in England the public became confused, thinking it might be a reprint of "Kidnapped". At publisher Cassell's request, the title was changed to "Catriona", after Balfour's daughter.

Tiger S Child written by Torey Hayden and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-03-06 with Psychology categories.

Special-education teacher Torey Hayden's first book, One Child, was an international bestseller, thrilling readers on every continent. Their hearts were captured by Sheila, a silent, troubled girl who had been abandoned on a highway by her mother and abused by her alcoholic father, and who refused to speak. As Hayden writes in the prologue to this book, "This little girl had a profound effect on me. Her courage, her resilience, and her inadvertent ability to express that great, gaping need to be loved that we all feel -- in short, her humanness -- brought me into contact with my own." Since then Hayden has gone on to write books about many of her students, but her fans continue to ask her, "What happened to Sheila?" The Tiger's Child is her response. Here Hayden tells how Sheila, now a young woman, finally came to terms with her nightmare childhood. When Hayden was working on One Child, she showed the manuscript to Sheila, then a teenager, and was astonished to find that Sheila remembered almost nothing of her troubled younger years. She had no recollection of her many clashes with her teacher as Hayden tried to break through her emotional pain. And although Hayden had managed to get Sheila to communicate and become an active and lively child, Sheila's home life was still very troubled. Her father had been sent to prison when she was eight and Sheila had run away from a series of foster homes until finally she was placed in a children's home. But as Hayden continued to renew her relationship with the teenage Sheila, the memories slowly came back, bringing with them feelings of abandonment and hostility. Overwhelmed by the intensity of her awakening emotions, Sheila was driven to suicidal despair. The Tiger's Child is the touching, inspiring story of how a maturing Sheila came to perceive her mother not as a monster who willfully cast off her eldest child, but as a weak, forlorn, ordinary human being. Able to appreciate her own strength and resilience, Sheila at last is free to overcome the haunting legacy of child abuse.
