The culture of burial and mourning is presently in a state of flux. The idea of using the cremated remains of loved ones to form jewelry no longer belongs to the realm of science fiction but has become a fact of modern life. Today, many countries are open to allowing the ashes of the dead to be turned into ornamental objects. Technically, this produces remembrance artifacts representing the dead. The new aspect is that the mortal remains continue to exist after death in the form of such an artifact, for which previous burial culture has no precedent. How do such "ash diamonds" figure into the mourning process? How do relatives deal with this phenomenon? What is the role of esthetics? How does the social environment react to this "metamorphosis"? And does this represent the renewal of the idea of relics? This book is based on interviews held with persons who decided to go this route of remembering their deceased loved ones. The authors also visited the production facilities of these precious stones, talked with experts about the process, and attended the delivery rituals. In addition to practical, theological, and sociological assessments, the volume includes case studies that provide a forum for those concerned to voice their opinions.

In jüngster Zeit bieten die Kirchen auf dem Markt alternativer Bestattungsformen vereinzelt auch ihre Sakralräume für Bestattungen an. In Kirchgebäuden, die nicht mehr oder nur noch teilweise liturgisch genutzt werden, entstehen Kolumbarien oder Urnenkirchen. Seit 2006 in Marl und Aachen in ehemaligen Pfarrkirchen Kolumbarien eingerichtet wurden, begann in der Bestattungskultur gewissermaßen ein neues Zeitalter. Mittlerweile gibt es gut drei Dutzend dieser Kirchenkolumbarien, etliche sind in Planung. Man knüpft hier an religionskulturell Bekanntes an – manches muss aber auch ganz neu gedacht werden. Was bieten diese besonderen Orte für die Predigt, für die Seelsorge und für die Liturgie? This study describes the origins of early Reformed confessional development using the example of those congregations of religious refugees most heavily influenced by John Laski: the congregation at Emden and the Dutch and French Strangers’ Churches in London. At its center are questions about the congregation as the location of ecclesiology. The outlines of Laski’s theology--which viewed the congregation as the communion of the body of Christ--are described in comparison to the approaches of other Reformers and in relationship to daily reality in the second half of the sixteenth century. Working from a rich base of source materials, the author discusses the development of teachings on church offices and the practice of church discipline, thus illuminating the self-understanding of the three congregations. Becker shows how reciprocal influences and attempts to conform led to the unification of doctrine and community life within these congregations.
