The Caribbean has played a crucial geopolitical role in the Western pursuit of economic dominance, yet Eurocentric research usually treats the Caribbean as a peripheral region, consequently labelling the inhabitants as beings without agency. Examining asymmetrical relations of power in the Greater Caribbean in historical and contemporary perspectives, this volume explores the region’s history of resistance and subversion of oppressive structures against the backdrop of the Caribbean’s central role for the accumulation of wealth of European and North American actors and the respective dialectics of modernity/coloniality, through a variety of experiences inducing migration, transnational exchange and transculturation. Contributors approach the Caribbean as an empowered space of opposition and agency and focus on perspectives of the region as a place of entanglements with a long history of political and cultural practices of resistance to colonization, inequality, heteronomy, purity, invisibilization, and exploitation. Ce livre a pour but d’étudier l’évolution de la représentation de la forêt dans l'imaginaire et la fiction littéraire. Lorsque la forêt est présente dans un livre, il est rare que ce soit comme simple décor ; la plupart du temps, elle joue un rôle décisif, en tant que personnage à part entière ; dans tous les cas, elle porte une forte charge symbolique. Il s’agit d’une figure profondément ambivalente, à la fois positive et négative : un lieu de refuge et de menace, accueillant et agressif, source d’épanouissement ou de régression. Dans une première partie (brève), le contexte de l’étude est exposé : les rapports entre l’homme et la forêt, à travers les approches historiques (de la préhistoire à l’époque actuelle), économiques (des diverses formes de l’exploitation forestière à la sylviculture), symboliques (dans les diverses cultures, mythes et religions). Je m’attache ensuite plus largement à exposer comment le thème de la forêt est traité dans le domaine littéraire : depuis sa présence dans l’Antiquité (poésie, philosophie), puis à travers les contes et légendes, les textes du Moyen Age (époque qualifiée d’« âge d’or » de la forêt) et jusqu’à l’époque contemporaine (poésie et roman) qui est la partie la plus développée. Quelques auteurs parmi ceux commentés : Julien Gracq, J.M.G. Le Clézio, Apollinaire, H.D. Thoreau... Le thème est essentiellement étudié dans la littérature de langue française, mais il peut également être éclairé par des exemples significatifs pris dans d’autres langues. Il est mis en relation avec des constantes plus larges de l’expression littéraire comme le sentiment de la nature ou la perception du paysage.
