In this book, Professor East discusses the vital relationship between history and geographical conditions. Drawing examples from ancient times up to the present, he demonstrates that a study of history must include consideration of the physical conditions under which an event occurs, and that "the particular characteristics of this setting serve not only to localise but also to influence part at least of the action." Topographical position, climate, distribution of water and minerals, the placement of routes and towns, and ease or difficulty of movement between districts and countries are among the factors which the historian must take into account. The late Hellenistic period witnessed the rise of an imperial power whose dominion extended across almost the whole known world. The Roman empire radically affected geographical conceptions, evoking new ways of describing the earth and of constructing its history. In this book the writings of three literary figures of the age are explored: the History of Polybius, two fragmentary works of Posidonius, and the universal Geography of Strabo. Analysis in terms of the philosophical concepts of time and space reveals the generic fluidity of such 'geographical' and 'historical' works. Furthermore, these broadly conceived accounts are shown to be appropriate literary media for the response to Roman power. They use, but transform, pre-existing Greek traditions in order to describe the new world of Rome, making them fitting products of a transitional age. This book provides a new approach to Roman imperialism by considering its impact on historiography and geographical thought.

Excerpt from Historical Geography on a Regional Basis, Vol. 2 The work here attempted is an effort to meet an undoubted demand. In private conversation, and in several of the leading periodicals, one often hears how urgently important it is for students both young and old to learn the connection between Geography and History. No great effort, as far as we can see, has been made to supply this need upon a general scientific basis. We can recall four books upon Historical Geography proper, as defined in the introduction to this volume: one by Mr. H. B. George; one by Professor A. P. Brigham, Geographic Influences in American History; one by Professor W. M. Ramsay, The Historical Geography of Asia Minor; and Professor George Adam Smith's brilliant and picturesque Historical Geography of the Holy Land, assuredly a model for all such. Of these, the American work fills an aching void very efficiently, but the last two only cover small regions. They are specialist books. Geography In Its Relation To History written by William Hughes and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-20 with Science categories.

Excerpt from Geography in Its Relation to History: A Lecture Delivered at the Birkbeck Institution I will not affirm that the relationship which geography bears to the records of human action in past ages offers the most attractive of the many aspects under which the subject may be regarded, though it would not be difficult, I think, to make out a strong case in support of such an assertion. Nor am I by any means sure that the historical relationships of geography are those that find most favour with professed cultivators of geographical science in the present day. There is a tendency, in some quarters, to speak of physical geography as the only geography worthy to be ranked as a science, and to regard other branches of the study as of inferior value, and as consequently entitled to little esteem. I hold this tendency to be founded upon an erroneous conception of what geography really is. And to involve an imperfect estimate of the place which physical geo graphy occupies (or rather should occupy) in the general scheme of geographical study. The truth is, that all geo graphy, if it be worth the name, is physical, or natural that is to say, is based upon a correct description of the earth's natural features and aspects, climates and productions. Physical geography is neither a new subject nor a separate subject, although the vastly increased and still increasing body of facts bearing upon the natural aspects and pheno mena of the globe, which have been accumulated within modern times, have formed the material from which ex tended generalizations, unknown to former ages, have been derived, and the relationships between geography and other branches of natural science more clearly established.
