This handbook addresses three areas of concern for the museum administrator concerning the protection of historic buildings, monuments, and archaeological sites located in seismic areas. It proposes pre-disaster measures such as taking accurate and complete documentation (photogrammetry is discussed in one of the 13 appendixes), risk awareness, planning, maintenance and inspections, etc. Second, when an earthquake strikes, the immediate emergency steps necessary to protect life and property are indicated; and after the earthquake, the strengthening of valuable cultural property (based on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, also in an appendix) should be included in the general program of prevention maintenance along with the repairs discussed in detail applicable to each architectural element, and to the site as a whole.

Authors first book (A Method to Predict a Significant Earthquake, Volume 1) shows how groups of a Natural Hazard such as Earthquakes co-relate to each other, and relate with Astronomical Objects close to Earth. In addition, he showed how these relations could be useful in predicting Earthquakes. At first two recent significant Earthquakes are chosen to study, and with the use of Historical Patterns and Precursor Events five more Earthquakes is been identified, totally ending up with seven Earthquakes in sequence. These Earthquakes were the seven terms of a unique series of Earthquake group as “S-Quake Group-1”. The Sun, Moon, and Jupiter is used in this research. By using the Astronomical Object’s Zenith-Point on the Earth’s surface, he showed some amazing relations in between that finally ended identifying the eighth term of the group. Hence, the most probability of an upcoming Earthquake with a high magnitude was about May 20, 2012. It proves Earthquakes are following some kind of patterns, and related to the Astronomical Objects near Earth. From another side, there is no relation with the Faults or Tectonic Plates in this prediction. Book Volume 2, is a continuation of his research, including some more important relations and patterns. Shahrokh, shows how his first prediction for May 20, 2012, came to fruition, and shows how the method predicts another next Earthquake term of the group, which is the ninth term.

This book is an attempt to demonstrate the analytical power of the holistic approach for understanding disasters. Six major earthquakes in Latin America are used as an example: the general idea is to place disasters in a broad social and regional context. Understanding disasters is a way of understanding the social system. The idea is to show that every major disaster is unique and different. Statistical methods may be useful for purposes of risk estimation but modern disasters are "systemic" and complex. In the chapter on the 2010 Chile earthquake we discuss the tsunami and why the system of tsunami alert did not work. The introductory chapter contains some basics of seismology (plate tectonics) and earthquake engineering. The 1985 Mexico earthquake describes why geology is important. Why was Mexico City founded in a lake? Technology must be adapted to the environment, not "imported" from possibly more advanced but different societies. The 1970 Peru earthquake is an example of disaster in a unique environment. Caracas 1967 takes us on a survey of different engineering solutions. And the 1960 Chile earthquake leads us on a retrospective survey--what has changed in Chile between the two major Chile earthquakes? A discussion on Charles Darwin’s observations of the 1835 Chile earthquake provides a fitting summary.

This thesis adopts the relative back-projection method to dramatically reduce “swimming” artifacts by identifying the rupture fronts in the time window of a reference station; this led to a faster and more accurate image of the rupture processes of earthquakes. Mitigating the damage caused by earthquakes is one of the primary goals of seismology, and includes saving more people’s lives by devising seismological approaches to rapidly analyze an earthquake’s rupture process. The back-projection method described in this thesis can make that a reality.
