Excerpt from Beyond a Reasonable Doubt?: The Original Trial of Caryl Chessman In 1929, a car in which he and his mother were riding was involved in a collision at a busy Los Angeles intersection. In addition to a fractured skull, Mrs. Chessman had two crushed vertebrae and she was permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Caryl, who had been Sitting in the auto's back seat, appeared to be uninjured until X-rays revealed that he had broken both his nose and his jaw. The resultant drain on the family finances forced the boy's father to give up the Pasadena house and rent an apart ment in one of Glendale's poorer sections. After two years of living from hand to mouth, Mr. Chessman finally gave up and put his family on the relief rolls. In 1936, Caryl caught diphtheria and was sent to the county hospital from which he was finally released with a recommendation that he spend the next six months in bed. "Fast paced and elegantly crafted, Theodore Hamm's Rebel and a Cause demands our attention. This deft historical analysis of the famous Chessman case and of the entire spectrum of political and cultural struggle surrounding capital punishment should be read by lay people and experts alike. Rigorously researched, superbly argued, this book -unfortunately - becomes all the more relevant with each new execution."—Christian Parenti, author of Lockdown America: Police and Prison in the Age of Crisis "Historians of the American 1960s have begun to attend to the previously-neglected topic of "crime in the streets." In the long run, the demand from the Right for "Law and Order!" may have done more to shape the history of subsequent decades than the better-known demands from the Left for "Freedom Now!" and "Peace in Vietnam!" In his crisply-written and subtly nuanced study Rebel and a Cause, Theodore Hamm shows how California death row inmate Caryl Chessman became the unlikely flashpoint for a series of passionate confrontations between advocates and opponents of the death penalty, as well as between the New Right, the New Left, and the liberal establishment."—Maurice Isserman, author of America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s "This book is a must read for anyone interested in the current death penalty debate."—George T. Davis, former counsel to Caryl Chessman

The Last Gasp written by Scott Christianson and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-12 with History categories.

The Last Gasp takes us to the dark side of human history in the first full chronicle of the gas chamber in the United States. In page-turning detail, award-winning writer Scott Christianson tells a dreadful story that is full of surprising and provocative new findings. First constructed in Nevada in 1924, the gas chamber, a method of killing sealed off and removed from the sight and hearing of witnesses, was originally touted as a "humane" method of execution. Delving into science, war, industry, medicine, law, and politics, Christianson overturns this mythology for good. He exposes the sinister links between corporations looking for profit, the military, and the first uses of the gas chamber after World War I. He explores little-known connections between the gas chamber and the eugenics movement. Perhaps most controversially, he has unearthed new evidence about American and German collaboration in the production and lethal use of hydrogen cyanide and about Hitler’s adoption of gas chamber technology developed in the United States. More than a book about the death penalty, this compelling history ultimately reveals much about America’s values and power structures in the twentieth century.
