The anthropology of art is currently at a crossroads. Although well versed in the meaning of art in small-scale tribal societies, anthropologists are still wrestling with the question of how to interpret art in a complex, post-colonial environment. Alfred Gell recently confronted this problem in his posthumous book Art and Agency. The central thesis of his study was that art objects could be seen, not as bearers of meaning or aesthetic value, but as forms mediating social action. At a stroke, Gell provocatively dismissed many longstanding but tired questions of definition and issues of aesthetic value. His book proposed a novel perspective on the roles of art in political practice and made fresh links between analyses of style, tradition and society. Offering a new overview of the anthropology of art, this book begins where Gell left off. Presenting wide-ranging critiques of the limits of aesthetic interpretation, the workings of objects in practice, the relations between meaning and efficacy and the politics of postcolonial art, its distinguished contributors both elaborate on and dissent from the controversies of Gells important text. Subjects covered include music and the internet as well as ethnographic traditions and contemporary indigenous art. Geographically its case studies range from India to Oceania to North America and Europe.

Dwellings of Enchantment: Writing and Reenchanting the Earth offers ecocritical and ecopoetic readings that focus on multispecies dwellings of enchantment and reenchant our rapport with the more-than-human world. It sheds light on the marvelous entanglements between humans and other life forms coexisting with us–entanglements that, when fully perceived, call onto humans to shift perspectives on both the causes and solutions to current ecological crises. Working against the disenchantment of humans’ relationships with and perceptions of the world entailed by a modern ontology, this book illustrates the power of ecopoetics to attune humans to the vibrant matter both within and outside of us. Braiding indigenous with non-indigenous worldviews, this book tackles ecopoetics emerging from varying locations in the world. It underscores the postmodernist, remythologizing processes going on in many ecopoetic texts, via magical realist modes and mythopoeia.

Praise for Enchantment's Reach: '...magnificent...possibly one of the best fantasy books of its kind ever written. It's just that deep, that soul-searching -- that good.' Micki Peluso, journalist, author. 'It just doesn't get any better than this... simply great writing! If you are searching for a great read with a deeper meaning that will leave you in contemplative thought, then this is the book for you.' Dennis Waller, author. 'Expect to be enchanted by the story, by the characters, by the fluid narrative that transport you to another world and keep you captivated to the end...I suspect this book is parading as fantasy while introducing us to glimpses of another reality which few of us suspect, except in our subconscious, is much closer to the unseen world of the archetypes that give form to our perceived reality.' Nano Daemon, author. '...encompasses an incredibly well built "intrication" of worlds that reflect the various layers of the subconscious and conscious mind... masterfully described...will keep you riveted to the page.' Patricia De Hemricourt, journalist, author. '...will keep you turning the pages and keep you guessing...full of feuds, religious cults and mysterious danger. If you like fantasy novels full of excitement and plenty of intrigue then this one is for you.' Caroline Gebbie, author. 'I have read the entire 6 book series of Enchantment's Reach... a true epic filled with mysteries and revelations, extending beyond the usual or ordinary but yet having an impacted lesson for present societies engulfed in turmoil, all with a narrative power that will charm the reader, holding them spellbound from beginning to end.' Caleb Jorge, author. A mind-bending fantasy series, Enchantment's Reach is an intricately-woven saga of conflict, mystery, intrigue, suspense, magic and betrayal. The land of Enchantment's Reach lies close upon mysterious Enchantment, out of which strange energies manifest and reality and illusion merge. The Reach is being torn apart from both inside and out. From the southwest have come the Karai, an unfathomable non-human warrior race, whose army now musters close to the border. The Karai are conspiring, it appears, with powerful denizens of Enchantment itself, who command advanced technologies and are believed to possess the powers of deities. Neither the Karai nor these enigmatic beings of Enchantment have previously been known to intervene directly in the affairs of lesser species. What have they come for? Internal as well as external conflicts threaten the Reach, and its King, Leth, his young queen, Issul, and their peoples. Ancient religious factions are resurgent, fanatical cults revive ancient feuds and rise to threaten the realm. And from somewhere deep within Enchantment's Reach itself a mysterious being appears, materializing from some other time or dimension to secretly wield unusual influence over Leth. Now come intrigues and desperate quests in which, together and individually, Issul and Leth discover their world is not as they had perceived it. Deep within pre-conscious creation their lives are rocked to the core as they begin to uncover the true nature of the awakening universe into which they have been born. Enchantment's Reach is epic. A visionary saga, brimming with secrets and revelations, with profound and enigmatic mysteries. It is equally an enquiry deep into the nature of existence, of experience and knowledge, desire, belief and treachery, and of scheming 'gods', multi-dimensional entities ranged against desperate humans discovering worlds within worlds and mysteries within mysteries - all with a narrative power that will enthral the reader from beginning to end, and beyond. Through interviews with British herbalists, the importance of hidden experiences of meetings with plants is explored alongside how such 'enchantment' has influenced the narrative of their lives. Some herbalists have visible entryways into studying, such as personal experience of taking herbal medicine, a search for a new career or a love of nature. Other entryways are more hidden, with many noting 'crossings' and 'callings' with plants at a young age. This sensual ability of herbs raises questions about the agency of living plants and of herbal medicines, and about how the relationship between herbalists and plants may be reconceived. Meetings with plants and herbal medicines allow herbalists to draw easily from a diverse range of influences that others may see as incommensurable."This fascinating, original and challenging book convincingly explores modern-day herbalists understanding of their place in the complementary health world, against the backdrop of encroaching professionalisation, legitimacy and scientism. In his case study interviews with herbalists, Guy Waddell draws our attention to the enchanting power of plants and their agentic qualities. In his quest for greater understanding of their sensual power, the author rejects the conventional modernity/rationalisation thesis, seen both in the sensual- affective energy that herbalists draw upon and in the ontological implications of human/nonhuman crossings. This book is an excellent contribution to our understanding of Western herbal medicine and contemporary thought." - Dr Stuart McClean, PhD. Associate Professor in Public Health (Health and Wellbeing), University of the West of England"In the field of herbal medicine, few seem to know their history and the lessons it teaches us. In The Enchantment of Western Herbal Medicine, Dr Guy Waddell not only provides the reader with a detailed history of the trials and triumphs of British Phytotherapy, but also travels into uncharted territory looking at how herbalists come to find their passion for plants and the use of them to help heal others. This is a new area of research and exploring the entryways to practice though interviews and clinician narratives is both a fascinating undertaking and a unique way of understanding our own motivations and experiences as herbalists." - David Winston, RH(AHG), DSc (hc), author of Adaptogens; Herbs for Strength, Stamina and Stress Relief"Both compelling and challenging, Guy Waddell's unique book is filled with the voices of herbalists and makes essential reading for anyone on their own journey into herbalism or those interested in human- plant relationships. Here is a much-needed roadmap for all who are exploring the diverse choices between ancient and modern, science and tradition, evidence and intuition, and human and nonhuman agency. My congratulations to the author for so brilliantly signposting the fundamental unity that resides at the heart of herbal practice." - Phil Deakin. President of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists
