Ethics And The Arts written by Paul Macneill and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-05-12 with Philosophy categories.

This book proposes that the highest expression of ethics is an aesthetic. It suggests that the quintessential performance of any field of practice is an art that captures an ethic beyond any literal statement of values. This is to advocate for a shift in emphasis, away from current juridical approaches to ethics (ethical codes or regulation), toward ethics as an aesthetic practice—away from ethics as a minimal requirement, toward ethics as an aspiration. The book explores the relationship between art and ethics: a subject that has fascinated philosophers from ancient Greece to the present. It explores this relationship in all the arts: literature, the visual arts, film, the performing arts, and music. It also examines current issues raised by ‘hybrid’ artists who are working at the ambiguous intersections between art, bio art and bioethics and challenging ethical limits in working with living materials. In considering these issues the book investigates the potential for art and ethics to be mutually challenged and changed in this meeting. The book is aimed at artists and students of the arts, who may be interested in approaching ethics and the arts in a new way. It is also aimed at students and teachers of ethics and philosophy, as well as those working in bioethics and the health professions. It will have appeal to the ‘general educated reader’ as being current, of considerable interest, and offering a perspective on ethics that goes beyond a professional context to include questions about how one approaches ethics in one’s own life and practices.

This book is the first of two volumes that, together, present for the first time a comprehensive collection of three decades of the theoretical writings of artist and theorist Bracha L Ettinger. Edited and introduced by Griselda Pollock they provide a systematic anthology of Ettinger’s path-breaking and influential concept of Matrixial subjectivity-as-encounter and jointness-in-difference, and chart her radical intervention in aesthetics, ethics and theories of subjectivity far beyond classical feminist and current gender/queer theory. This first volume includes the writings in which Ettinger elaborates her original concepts of Matrixial space-time and metramorphosis, fascinance, wit(h)nessing, resonance, transcryptum, com-passion, self-fragilization and resistance, co-emergence and copoiesis transform theories of the subject, Eros, alliance and love, sexual difference, alterity, relationality, trauma and violence. Her critical dialogue with theorists including Levinas, Lacan, Lyotard and Deleuze & Guattari, Butler, Cavarero and Irigaray is evident here. A leading authority on Matrixial theory, Griselda Pollock provides explanatory prefaces to each chapter and a lengthy introduction that situates Ettinger’s work in relation to socio-psychoanalytical theory and practice and current social and philosophical debates. Ettinger’s interlacing of psychoanalysis, ethics, and aesthetics can be seen here to address some of the deepest challenges of our social, cultural and political existence today.

Of Remixology written by David J. Gunkel and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-01 with Philosophy categories.

A new theory of moral and aesthetic value for the age of remix, going beyond the usual debates over originality and appropriation. Remix—or the practice of recombining preexisting content—has proliferated across media both digital and analog. Fans celebrate it as a revolutionary new creative practice; critics characterize it as a lazy and cheap (and often illegal) recycling of other people's work. In Of Remixology, David Gunkel argues that to understand remix, we need to change the terms of the debate. The two sides of the remix controversy, Gunkel contends, share certain underlying values—originality, innovation, artistic integrity. And each side seeks to protect these values from the threat that is represented by the other. In reevaluating these shared philosophical assumptions, Gunkel not only provides a new way to understand remix, he also offers an innovative theory of moral and aesthetic value for the twenty-first century. In a section called “Premix,” Gunkel examines the terminology of remix (including “collage,” “sample,” “bootleg,” and “mashup”) and its material preconditions, the technology of recording. In “Remix,” he takes on the distinction between original and copy; makes a case for repetition; and considers the question of authorship in a world of seemingly endless recompiled and repurposed content. Finally, in “Postmix,” Gunkel outlines a new theory of moral and aesthetic value that can accommodate remix and its cultural significance, remixing—or reconfiguring and recombining—traditional philosophical approaches in the process.

Aesthetics Beyond The Arts written by Arnold Berleant and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-23 with Architecture categories.

Taking the view that aesthetics is a study grounded in perception, the essays in this volume exhibit many sides of the perceptual complex that is the aesthetic field and develop them in different ways. They reinvigorate our understanding of such arts as music and architecture; they range across the natural landscape to the urban one; they reassess the place of beauty in the modern environment and reassess the significance of the contributions to aesthetic theory of Kant and Dewey; and they broach the kinds of meanings and larger understanding that aesthetic engagement with the human environment can offer. Written over the past decade, these original and innovative essays lead to a fresh encounter with the possibilities of aesthetic experience, one which has constantly evolved, moving in recent years in the direction of what Berleant terms 'social aesthetics', which enhances human-environmental integration and sociality.

Invitation To Ethical Fullness written by Stephen David Ross and has been published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-22 with categories.

The world is full of things full of being, things that matter to other things, things that matter to themselves, where how they matter, and what mattering means, exceeds all limits and expectations. Such a fullness is ethical, exceeding comprehension and anticipation, inexhaustibly full in goodness and abundance, in suffering and joy. I wrote my book, Ethical Fullness: Thinking of Animals, Believing in Things, to express such an ethics, from animals to plants and things. Such a fullness is also aesthetic, inexhaustibly filled with beauty and abundance, with enchantment and wonder. I wrote my book, The World as Image, to express such an aesthetics. The fullness of being is full beyond itself, full beyond ethics and aesthetics, where they are full beyond themselves. Here I hope to provide a guide to such a fullness, with ethical fullness foremost in mind. This guide and invitation continues the more complex, earlier work by making it more accessible, but also by developing what fullness means and why it is ethical. It provides answers to the persistent questions of why ethics is so difficult, why injustice is always mixed with justice, why the world is not a better place. The answer is that this divergence and variation is what fullness means. This book may be read in different ways: As an introduction to Ethical Fullness, which spells out its movements in greater detail; As a more explicit account of what ethical fullness means in human life, given its complexities and evasions, supposing the development in Ethical Fullness; As an extension of the theory of ethical fullness in the context of human life, ethics and politics, taking the thinking and believing of Ethical Fullness for granted; As another struggle to be ethical in the fullness of its exposition.
