This book is not another volume attempting to persuade the reader of the rights of gays and lesbians in society and in the church. Instead it assumes the reader is a minister or student of ministry who already has a passion for this issue and is looking for better strategies to speak out of this passion in the pulpit. Too often progressive preachers avoid speaking about issues related to sexual orientation out of fear of rejection from the congregation, or address them in ways that unintentionally alienates either gay or straight hearers. Askew and Allen offer preachers tools for recognizing and prophetically countering heterosexism in the pulpit while being pastoral toward those in the pews who may not hold the same view as the preacher. The range of issues found at the intersection of homosexuality and the proclamation of the Christian gospel in light of the church's division and the changing landscape of society's attitudes is diverse and complex. Allen and Askew represent the combination of critical theology and contemporary homiletics needed to offer preachers new strategies for advocating against social and ecclesial discrimination directed at homosexuals and for the full inclusion of all in the church.

Preaching And The Human Condition written by Prof O. Wesley Allen JR. and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-10-18 with Religion categories.

In the wake of Enlightenment emphasis on the individual and confidence in human progress/ability, sermons often suffer from a lack of adequate analysis and presentation of the human condition. The result is that preachers either 1. (intentionally or unintentionally) offer self-help type messages or 2. fail to help hearers experience the breadth of the good news of Jesus Christ because the “bad news” of the world is not presented with weight. In this work, the author proposes to use the pericope in which Jesus is asked about the greatest commandment (Mk 12:28–31) as a lens for preachers exploring the human condition cumulatively from three different perspectives across the course of their preaching week in and week out. “Love God” suggests a perspective in which the human condition is seen in relation to a broken relationship between humanity and God (vertical). “Love neighbor” suggests a perspective in which the broken relationship is between humans and others (horizontal). And “as yourself” suggests a brokenness in relationship to one’s self (inner). While different theological schools have emphasized these perspectives differently as the starting points for their anthropology, views of sin, etc., all schools include all three perspectives. In individual chapters, the author will unpack these three perspectives theologically, move to suggest practical homiletical approaches to preaching in relation to each perspective, and provide a sample sermon dealing with that perspective.

In this ground-breaking book the authors show that the prevailing sexual ethic is no longer useful. It presumes as ideal, a uniform morality based on a limited understanding of human sexuality. Heterosexism is revealed to be a system of prejudice that both grows out of and supports this ethic. It produces various forms of discrimination, particularly those against gay and lesbian people, that cannot be justified. The authors investigate scripture and tradition and explore emerging social scientific data regarding sexual identity, taking seriously the experiences of gay and lesbian Christians. Their investigation supports the view that reformation of Christian sexual ethics is both necessary and possible. They suggest that offering a pluriform rather than a uniform sexual ethic will result in a more responsible and viable dialogue on the ethical questions that emerge when we move beyond heterosexism.

As many black churches attempt to become welcoming spaces for LGBTQ people, preachers are navigating ways to develop sermons that are more inclusive and welcoming. Pastors and ministers can begin transforming their congregations to become extensions of Christ through preaching sermons about radical inclusive Christian hospitality (RICH). RICH preaching encourages its hearers to embrace those of the queer community as neighbors deserving of love, compassion, and healing.

The only study of its kind, Being Gay and Lesbian in a Catholic High School offers compelling evidence to Catholic educators, clergy, and laypeople that their superb academic institutions are not fulfilling the clear mandate of the Church on inclusive, loving behavior toward sexual minorities. This powerful and moving book presents personal testimonies and an original study of Catholic students' attitudes toward gays and lesbians, as well as reprinting the actual teachings of the Church on homosexuals and homosexuality. Two trends in the early twenty-first-century intersect to give this volume immediate relevance: 1) The emerging postmodern ethos in North America is calling into question many things we have taken for granted, including the purposes of the church; and 2) our time is increasingly fractious as groups with distinct worldviews become polarized and often antagonistic. Eleven noted contributors join a growing current that sees conversation as an image to refresh our thinking about the nature and purpose of the church, and as a process in which individuals and communities with different perspectives come together for real understanding. Under the Oak Tree employs the image of Sarah and Abraham greeting three visitors under the Oaks of Mamre as an image for the church as a community of conversation, a community that opens itself to the otherness of the Bible, voices in history and tradition, others in the contemporary social and ecological worlds. Furthermore, the book shows how conversation can lead the church to action. The book takes a practical approach by exploring how conversation can shape key parts of the church's life. Topics include preaching, worship, formation, evangelism, pastoral care, mission and ecumenism, social witness, and the relationship of Christianity to other religions. Foundational chapters consider God as conversational, the church as community of conversation, and the minister as conversation leader.
