Is our world autonomous or its existence requires another level of reality that acts in the background to bring about the phenomena? This is an intriguing question that has not been settled by science since the time that the Eleatic philosophers challenged the autonomy of the world 2,500 years ago. If our world is not autonomous, then there are significant implications regarding every aspect of our lives, including our science and religion. Non-autonomy would further imply that life did not emerge by chance but there is an underline intelligence that governs its creation and evolution. In essence, the possibility of a non-autonomous world directly challenges the consistency of modern evolution theory. The intelligent design vs. evolution debate is probably the most controversial one of our times. Beyond Intelligent Design approaches the notorious intelligent design doctrine from a novel perspective based on the virtual reality hypothesis and in a way that allows falsification through experimentation. Obscured facts regarding the foundations of classical but also of modern science are presented that challenge the autonomy of this world. The shaky foundations of modern science warrant the investigation of alternatives, such as theories that deny the autonomy of this world and corroborate the hypothesis of intelligent interaction, which in turn indirectly supports the intelligent design hypothesis. Beyond Intelligent Design takes the reader on a journey in time and space that starts in Elea, at around 550 BC. Elea was a small ancient Greek colony in the south of Italy. It is where the strongest blow to common scientific wisdom was ever delivered by a group of poets and philosophers against efforts to understand the world through observation, experimentation and inductive reasoning. Then, the book proceeds to reconcile the Eleatic arguments with the ideas expressed by Cartesian philosophers of the 17th century, discusses how Descartes, Newton and Leibniz dealt with them and then presents some of the foundational weaknesses of the most successful modern scientific theories, special relativity and quantum mechanics. Beyond Intelligent Design does not attempt to provide direct support to the intelligent design hypothesis but instead argues that science must not exclude alternatives theories, such as those that challenge the autonomy of this world, because such autonomy is not evident. More importantly, the book asserts that alternative theories about the emergence of the world and human life should be part of the educational curriculum because they can provide a balance to the cultivation of human values.

In a time when creationist textbooks continue to appear in classrooms and the president of the United States encourages educators to "teach both sides" of the argument, Scientists Confront Creationism presents an accessible defense of evolution and a blueprint to save public education in this country from the dangers of pseudoscience. With sixteen essays from some of the most important advocates in the field, including Kevin Padian, John R. Cole, and Wesley R. Elsberry, Scientists Confront Creationism reveals the persuasive evidence for evolution and the bankruptcy of the creationists' claims. While telling the history of creationism in America, this powerful collection eviscerates "intelligent design" and reveals the newest tactics taken by antievolutionist proponents. As long as science requires public advocacy, this highly intelligent treasury of scholarship will remain an essential resource for students, teachers, and open-minded citizens

The Second Digital Turn written by Mario Carpo and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-20 with Architecture categories.

The first digital turn in architecture changed our ways of making; the second changes our ways of thinking. Almost a generation ago, the early software for computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) spawned a style of smooth and curving lines and surfaces that gave visible form to the first digital age, and left an indelible mark on contemporary architecture. But today's digitally intelligent architecture no longer looks that way. In The Second Digital Turn, Mario Carpo explains that this is because the design professions are now coming to terms with a new kind of digital tools they have adopted—no longer tools for making but tools for thinking. In the early 1990s the design professions were the first to intuit and interpret the new technical logic of the digital age: digital mass-customization (the use of digital tools to mass-produce variations at no extra cost) has already changed the way we produce and consume almost everything, and the same technology applied to commerce at large is now heralding a new society without scale—a flat marginal cost society where bigger markets will not make anything cheaper. But today, the unprecedented power of computation also favors a new kind of science where prediction can be based on sheer information retrieval, and form finding by simulation and optimization can replace deduction from mathematical formulas. Designers have been toying with machine thinking and machine learning for some time, and the apparently unfathomable complexity of the physical shapes they are now creating already expresses a new form of artificial intelligence, outside the tradition of modern science and alien to the organic logic of our mind.

Why do men's testicles hang outside the body? Why does our appendix sometimes explode and kill us? And who does the Designer like better, anyway - us, or squid? These and other questions are addressed in The Not-So-Intelligent Designer. Dr. Abby Hafer argues that the human body has many faulty design features that would never have been the choice of an intelligent creator. She also points out other animals that got better body parts, which makes the Designer look a bit strange; discusses the history and politics of Intelligent Design and creationism; reveals animals that shouldn't exist according to Intelligent Design; and disposes of the idea of irreducible complexity. Her points are illustrated with pictures (by Alexander Winkler), wit, and erudition.

The debate over Intelligent Design seemingly represents an extension of the fundamental conflict between creationists and evolutionists. ID proponents, drawing on texts such as Darwin's Black Box and Of Pandas and People, urge schools to "teach the controversy" in biology class alongside evolution. The scientific mainstream has reacted with fury, branding Intelligent Design as pseudoscience and its advocates as religious fanatics. But stridency misses the point, argues Nathaniel Comfort. In The Panda's Black Box, Comfort joins five other leading public intellectuals—including Daniel Kevles and Pulitzer Prize winner Edward Larson—to explain the roots of the controversy and explore the intellectual, social, and cultural factors that continue to shape it. One of the few books on the ID issue that moves beyond mere name-calling and finger-pointing, The Panda's Black Box challenges assumptions on each side of the debate and engages both the appeal and dangers of Intelligent Design. This lively collection will appeal to anyone seeking a deeper understanding of what's really at stake in the debate over evolution.

Productive Evolution written by Nicholas Rescher and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-09-15 with Philosophy categories.

A doctrine of intelligent design through evolution is not going to find many friends. It is destined to encounter opposition on all sides. Among scientists the backlog of evolution will have little patience for intelligent design. Among religiousists, many who form intelligent design have their doubts about evolution. In the general public s mind there is a diametrical opposition between evolution and intelligent design: one excludes the other. This book will argue that this view of the matter is not correct, and that in actuality one can regard evolution itself as a pathway to intelligent design. We would do well to go beyond The Origin of Species and taking as our guide such works as W. Wentworth Thomson s On Growth and Form acknowledging that evolutionary adaptation can result in solutions of a sort that intelligence could readily ratify. Accordingly, what the present book seeks is a naturalization of Intelligent Design that sees such design as itself the result of natural and evolutionary processes."

What Darwin never knew. Because of discoveries in the last 60 years, the Darwinian theory of evolution has never looked so improbable. The Dangerous Truth booklet series presents astounding ideas from "There Are No Mansions In Heaven" (NMIH), broken into into bite-size chunks, with additional thoughts from the authors. Many people have suggested that we break NMIH into smaller booklets to make it easier to digest. The "Road Map" in NMIH says, "It is good to see where we've come from and where we're going. It's good to hear the counter-narrative. It's good to be reminded of those astonishing truths. It's good to shift our focus toward eternity." Now you can do that in smaller bites, one amazing truth at a time.
